시시포스의 일상, 지체장애인의 내재화된 낙인 견디기

국문 초록

과거에 비해서 장애인에 대한 처우 개선은 나날이 발전하고 있다. 하지만 장애인을 대하는 인식은 차별과 배제에서 여전히 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 이에 지체장애인 J의 사회적 낙인으로서의 개인 서사를 통해서 현 사회의 숨겨진 폭력적인 민낯을 드러내고자 한다. 연구 방법으로 택한 개인서사는 보편성의 결여라는 우려 보다는 한 사람의 생애사 맥락 전반에 집중함으로써 세상과 소통하는 지체장애인의 내러티브가 깊고 폭넓어진다는 데에 비중을 두었다. 비언어적 표현에도 주목하여 구술자의 내면세계를 파악하고자 하는 등, 다섯 차례의 심층면접을 통해 모아진 내러티브의 재료인 이야기를 각각의 주제별로 다시 재구성하여 개인적 고통이 사회적 균열과 연결되는 접점을 찾고자 하였다. 그리하여 ‘불구의 몸으로서의 낙인’, ‘사회적 낙인으로서의 성(性)과 가족’, ‘사회적 낙인으로서의 직장 생활’에 관한 사례를 중심으로 3장을 엮었고, 연이은 4장에서는 ‘낙인에서 더욱 낙인으로 고착화 되는 지름길’, 지체장애인의 ‘글쓰기’를 다룸으로써 부조리한 일상을 견뎌야하는 ‘오늘날의 수많은 J들’의 지체장애인의 내재화된 낙인 견디기를 시시포스 일상으로 비유했다. 한 사회의 구성원인 한 개인의 고통 받는 서사는 어떤 식으로든 부메랑이 되어 완벽하다고 믿었던 ‘관계’ 혹은 ‘제도’의 빈틈을 드러내준다. 사회적인 낙인이라고 자처하는 지극히 사적인 서사 또한 사회적인 차원에서 바라볼 필요가 있다는 반증이다. 이 연구가 앞으로의 장애인 처우 개선 및 인식개선에 기초적 자료로 활용되는 가능성을 모색하는 바이다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 한계점은 지극히 한 개인적인 서사이기에 일반적인 지체 장애인의 표본이라고 할 수 없다는 점이다.

영문 초록

The treatment of people with disabilities is improving every day. However, to date, the social perception of people with disabilities is not free from discrimination and exclusion. Through the personal narrative of the social stigma experienced by J, a person with a physically disability, this study aims to reveal the hidden, often violent, face of the current society toward people with disabilities. The personal narrative was selected as the research method to highlight the diversity of the narratives of people with physical disabilities who communicate with the world by focusing on the overall context of their life history, rather than any concerns regarding the lack of universality. To understand the narrator’s world, attention is paid to nonverbal communication, and the story is understood through five in-depth interviews. Each interview was constructed to suit a subject that helped find the point of contact between personal pain and social rift. Finally, three chapters were compiled: one focusing on the cases of “Stigma as an incapacitated body,” the second focusing on “Sex and family as a social stigma,” and the third chapter examining “Work life as a social stigma.” By examining the writings of people with physical disabilities, we can understand the plight of many Js who regularly endure society’s inhuman treatment of and stigma toward people with physical disabilities. The sufferings endured by an individual who is a member of the society somehow became a boomerang that revealed the shortcomings of a “relationship” or “institution” that he had once considered perfect. It is an extremely private narrative that claims to reveal a social stigma; further, it is disproven and should be viewed from a social level. The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of using such narratives as basic data to improve the treatment of and social awareness regarding people with disabilities. However, this paper is limited in that it does not consider a representative sample of people with disabilities but includes only a very personal narrative.
