국문 초록

본 연구는 사회학적 접근을 취한 번역가 연구로 부르디외 실천이론의 핵심 개념인 아비투스(habitus)를 이론적 틀로 삼아 중국어 출판번역가의 김택규의 아비투스를 고찰한다. 아비투스 고찰의 자료로는 해당 번역가가 출간한 에세이 단행본 2종 및 인터뷰, 역자후기를 활용하였다. 분석 결과 김택규는 번역가가 되기 전 시인 지망생으로 글쓰기를 연마하며 번역에 필요한 문화자본을 획득하였다. 출판번역장에 우연한 기회에 진입한 후에는 출판사가 의뢰하는 원서를 번역하는 것에서 벗어나 직접 인지도가 낮은 작가를 발굴하여 국내 독자들에게 소개하고 이것이 계기가 되어 인접장으로 활동 영역을 확장하기에 이른다. 출판기획자로 활동하고 박사 학위를 취득한 후 대학에서 강단에 서는 등 다양한 활동을 지속하는 이유는 번역으로 획득하는 경제자본만으로는 생계를 유지하기가 어려운 중국어 출판번역계의 현실 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 다양한 활동을 통해 번역 행위를 지속하는 이유는 번역행위를 통해 얻는 경제자본보다 번역을 할 때의 느끼는 창조의 자유와 자신의 번역물이 번역장, 출판장, 문학장에서 변화를 불러일으킬 수 있다는 권력의지 등 상징자본에 큰 의미를 부여하기 때문인 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the habitus of a book translator Taekkyu Kim reflected in his paratext, including his essays, peritext, and interviews. Taking a sociological approach using Bourdieu’s key concepts such as habitus, fields, capital, illusio, and doxa, this study explores how Kim entered the book translation field, acquired and developed cultural capital that is essential for a book translator, internalized and reshaped the field’s doxa, and advanced into other adjacent fields. What is striking is the unfairly small economic capital translators acquire in Korea’s book translation field. In his essay, Kim outspokenly advises novice translators to develop skills as publishing planners or do anything else to generate extra income to complement their main income source and thus allow them to stay in the book translation field. Nevertheless, Kim admitted he would never give up his job as a translator owing to the profound joy from two particular elements of his translation practice deeply linked to symbolic capital. First, the sense of freedom he feels as he creates his version of the translation, and second, the sense of power he experiences as a cultural mediator who selects which source texts to translate and thus wields influence over Korea’s literature field. These two elements are particularly meaningful because of their deep relation to Kim’s primary habitus and their revelation of his motives for translation, in Bourdieu’s term, illusio.
