대학(원)생의 자기개념 명확성과 사회불안의 관계

국문 초록

‘자기’는 사회불안의 발생 및 유지 과정에서 꾸준히 강조된 요인이다. 이에 ‘자기’ 영역에서 사회불안으로 이어지는 경로 탐색의 중요성이 시사된다. 본 연구에서는 사회불안의 발생 과정에 대한 이해를 높이고자 대학(원)생의 자기개념 명확성과 사회불안의 관계에서 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 사회비교 경향성의 매개효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 2018년 3월 5일부터 4월 9일까지 총 5주 동안 경기도 소재 대학(원)에 재학 중인 461명을 대상으로 자기개념 명확성, 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족, 사회비교 경향성, 사회불안을 측정하는 자기보고식 설문을 실시하였으며, 그중 결측치 또는 불성실한 응답을 제외한 424명의 자료를 통계적 분석에 사용하였다. 그다음 각 변인 간 상관관계를 살펴보고, 구조방정식 모형과 매개효과 검증을 통해 변인 간의 경로를 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 자기개념 명확성과 사회불안의 관계에서 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 사회비교 경향성이 각각 단순 매개됨을 확인하였으며, 더 나아가 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 사회비교 경향성이 순차적으로 이중 매개되는 것을 확인하였고, 우울을 통제한 후에도 동일한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 자기개념 명확성이 사회불안에 주요한 예측 변인으로, 자기개념 명확성이 낮을수록 불확실성에 대한 인내력이 부족하며, 타인과 사회적 비교를 많이 하게 되어 사회불안으로 이어질 수 있다는 점을 시사한다. 끝으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점에 대해 논의하였다.

영문 초록

‘Self’ has been a steadily emphasized factor in the occurrence and maintenance of social anxiety. It suggests the importance of exploring routes that lead to social anxiety from the ‘self’ area. In this study, to enhance understanding of the occurrence process of social anxiety, we try to verify the sequentially mediating role between intolerance of uncertainty and social comparison tendency in the path from self-concept clarity to social anxiety. To this end, 461 (under)graduate students were asked to complete self-concept clarity, intolerance of uncertainty, social comparison tendency, and social anxiety from March 5 to April 9, 2018 for a total of 5 weeks, and 424 of them were used for statistical analysis, excluding missing or unfaithful responses. Then, we examined the correlation between each variable and explored the path between the variables through the structural equation models and verification of the mediated effects. As a result of the study, in the relationship between self-concept clarity and social anxiety, it was confirmed that the intolerance of uncertainty and the social comparison tendency were mediated, respectively. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the intolerance of uncertainty and the social comparison tendency were sequentially mediated. We obtained the same results after controlling depression. These results suggest that self-concept clarity is a significant predictor of social anxiety. The lower the self-concept clarity, the less tolerant about uncertainty inducing the increase of social comparison tendency with others, leading to social anxiety. Finally, we discussed the significance and limitations of this study.
