전주 선미촌에서의 여성주의적 예술 실천의 가능성

국문 초록

본 연구는 성매매집결지에서 예술을 매개로 한 여성주의적 실천이 가능한가에 관한 질문으로시작했다. 성매매집결지는 개항기 유곽을 시작으로 젠더 위계를 비롯한 다양한 권력 관계가 오랫동안 유지되어 온 공간이다. 이러한 성매매집결지는 최근 도시 사업 대상지로 선정되면서 변화의갈림길에 서 있으며, 몇 사례는 문화적 도시재생을 표방해 진행되고 있다. 전주 선미촌은 그 선구적 사례로, 젠더 거버넌스 구축과 문화적 도시재생 사업이 진행되면서 다양한 예술 작업이 전개되었다. 본 연구는 선미촌의 예술 사례 《리본 프로젝트》와 새 장르 공공미술의 특징을 보이는《Second Wind》를 조사하고, 여성주의적 실천과 어떻게 닿아 있는지 고찰한다. 이를 위해 우선 새 장르 공공미술의 개념과 특징에 대해 살펴본다. 그리고 문헌 고찰과 현장답사, 예술가와 전북여성인권지원센터 활동가와의 면담 등을 통해 선미촌에서 문화적 도시재생이진행된 과정과 내용, 예술 사례들을 조사, 분석한다. 전주시는 선미촌의 폐·공가를 매입해 성평등센터, 복합문화공간 등의 공간으로 전환 중이다. 이 과정에서 《리본 프로젝트》와 같은 성 산업의 실태를 폭로하고 성찰을 촉구하는 장소 특정적미술 작업이 진행되었다. 독립예술제 《Second Wind》는 공간과 예술의 타자화를 경계했던 예술가들이 독립을 선언하며 선미촌에서 버려진 공간과 주민들의 삶을 조명했는데, 다양한 매체와장르의 활용, 공동체와의 협업, 소수자나 여성에 대한 인식 재고 등 새 장르 공공미술의 특징과의의를 보여 주었다. 한편 이러한 예술 활동은 직접적으로 페미니즘 미술을 표방하지는 않았으나, 선미촌에서 통용되었던 젠더 위계와 통념적 시선들을 해체하고자 했다는 점에서 확장된 의미에서의 여성주의적 실천이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study began with the question of whether feminist practices can be practiced through art in prostitution districts. Prostitution districts are places where various power relations, including gender hierarchy, have long been maintained with the advent of the licensed quarter. They are at the crossroads of a great change, with the urban redevelopment or urban regeneration planned. In particular, Seonmichon in Jeonju was a pioneering example where various art projects were carried out along with the establishment of gender governance and the development of cultural urban regeneration projects. This study investigates some art projects in Seonmichon－《The Re-born Project》 I, II and 《Second Wind》, which feature “new genre public art,” and it examines how the two cases are in contact with feminist practices. We first look at the concepts and characteristics of new genre public art. In this regard, we investigate and analyze the process, contents, and art cases of cultural urban regeneration in Seonmichon through literature reviews, field surveys, and interviews with activists from the Jeonbuk Women’s Human Rights Support Center and some artists. Jeonju City has purchased prostituted buildings and is converting them into spaces, such as gender equality centers, complex cultural spaces, etc. In the process, site-specific art－《The Re-born Project》 I, II were carried out to expose the reality of the sex industry and to urge reflection. Artists have performed the new genre public art－Independent Arts Festival 《Second Wind》. They cast light on abandoned spaces and the memories of the residents’ lives. They showed characteristics of the new genre public art, including the use of various media and genres, collaboration with communities, and awareness of minorities and women. On the other hand, this art activity did not directly advocate feminism, but it was also a feminist practice in an extended sense in that it sought to dismantle the gender hierarchy and the conventional gaze commonly held in Seonmichon.
