대학영어전용수업에 대한 비판적 담론분석 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 대학교 ‘영어전용수업’에 대한 미디어 담론이 우리 사회에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 영어전용수업에 대한 실증적인 다양한 연구에도 불구하고 미디어에서 미치는 사회적 영향에 대한 연구가 진행되지 않았기 때문이다. 이를 위해 1994년부터 최근까지 조선일보와 중앙일보에서 검색된 38건의 기사를 비판적 담론분석방법으로 기사를 중심으로 텍스트적 실천, 담화적 실천, 사회적 실천을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 텍스트적 실천에서 은유화 및 과어휘화 현상과 함께 영어전용강의가 국제화 역량을 강화하기 위해 필요하고 확장되고 있다는 것이다. 담론적 실천 분석에서는 보도 기사(30건)가 가장 많았고, 인터뷰(5건), 여론(3건) 순으로 장르별 기사가 분포되었다. 인터뷰 기사에서는 주로 총장과 대학관계자의 인터뷰만 보여주었고, 수업을 담당하는 교수 및 수용자인 학생들의 목소리는 배제된 모습을 보여주고 있다. 사회적 실천에서는 초반기사에서는 한국의 영어교육 수준면에서 국제화 가 되려면 아직 갈 길이 멀다는 내용이 지배적이고, 결국 국제화 담론에 힘이 실리면서 신자유주의 헤게모니가 교육을 장악하게 되었고 대학평가로 인한 서열화 및 영어교육의 시장화되는 것에 대한 담론형성을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the impact of media discourse on university English-Mediated Instruction(EMI) on our society. Despite the empirical variety of studies on EMI, no studies have been conducted on social effects on the media. To this end, 38 articles that were searched in the Chosun Ilbo and JoongAng Ilbo from 1994 to recently were analyzed for textual practice, discourse practice and social practice based on articles based on critical discourse analysis methods. The analysis shows that in the textual practice, EMI is needed and expanded to strengthen internationalization capabilities, along with metaphorical and overlexicalization phenomena. In the discourse action analysis, there were the largest number of press articles (30 cases), followed by interviews (5 cases), and public opinion (3 cases). Interview articles mainly showed interviews between the president and university officials, while the voices of the students, who are professors and inmates in charge of the classes, were excluded. In social practice, the dominant theme in the first half of the history is that there is still a long way to go to become internationalized in terms of the level of English education in Korea, and in the end, the neo-liberalistic hegemony gained control of education, showing the formation of discourse on ranking and marketization of English education due to university evaluations.
