온라인 번역기 사용이 대학생의 영작 능력과 영작 능력 향상에 대한 자기 평가에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 온라인 번역기 사용이 대학 신입생 영어 글쓰기 실력과 자기 평가에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 살펴보았다. 실험은 대학 신입생 91명을 대상으로 하였고, 실험에 참여한 두 연구자는 교양영어 배치고사 결과에 따라 중급반에서 독해와 영작 과목을 이수하는 학생들을 온라인 번역기 사용반과 온라인 사전 반에 배치한 후 8주 동안 영작 과업을 진행하였다. 자료 수집에는 학생들이 제출한 사전 · 사후 영작물과 학생들이 자신의 영작 실력에 대한 평가지의 응답 내용을 t-test로 분석하였다. 분석결과에서 온라인 번역기를 활용하여 영작 과업을 수행한 학생들의 영작 능력이 영어사전을 활용한 학생들보다 더 높게 향상되었음이 확인되었다. 특히, 번역기를 사용한 학생들의 글의 내용적인 측면과 구두점 사용에서 사전을 활용한 학생들도 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에 높은 향상을 보였다. 이 외에도 학생 스스로 자신의 영작 실력 향상에 대한 자기 평가를 요청한 설문지에 응답한 응답을 사전·사후 비교 분석한 결과 온라인 번역기를 사용한 학생들은 구두점 사용에 대한 능력이 향상되었다고 믿었다. 본 연구 결과를 통하여 온라인 번역기를 다양한 영작 과업에 활용할 수 있는 다양한 교수법을 개발하여 학생들이 온라인 번역기의 장점을 영작에 활용하도록 도와야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study investigated to what extent online translator use influences EFL college students’ writing ability. Divided into two, the students of online dictionary group (n = 46) used an online dictionary for looking up words and those of online translator group (n = 45) edited their drafts with online translators for eight weeks. Comparisons were made between the students in the two groups regarding the scores of the pre- and post- writings and the self-evaluation on their English writing skills. The results found that the students of the online translator group achieved higher scores in terms of content and punctuation, which indicated that the students have benefited from focusing on the content with the help of online translators. In addition, although the self-evaluation of the students in the two groups has not much changed, those who used the online translators believed that their punctuation skill has improved. These findings show that the use of online translators has a positive effect on students English writing skills and their self-evaluation of English writing skills. Therefore, it seems that it is more necessary to discuss various English writing activities and teaching methods that can be used in classes using online translators.
