자녀를 아동양육시설에 맡긴 어머니의 경험에 관한 질적 사례연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 자녀를 가정에서 양육하지 못하고 시설에 보냈던 어머니의 경험을 깊이 있게 탐색하였다. 선행연구가 대부분 시설보호 아동과 종사자의 관점에서 이루어졌던 한계를 벗어나 시설보호를 맡긴 원가족, 특히 어머니의 관점에서 살펴보았다는 데 의미가 있다. 연구참여자는 자녀를 아동양육시설에 맡긴 한명의 어머니였고 심층 인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 연구기간은 2017년 3월부터 2017년 7월까지 5개월 동안 이루어졌다. 수집된 자료는 질적 사례연구 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 자녀를 아동양육시설에 맡긴 어머니의 경험은 ‘버티고 버텼지만 어쩔 수 없었던 이별의 뒤엉킨 감정을 끌어안은 채 다시 어머니의 자리를 찾아가는 여정’으로 도출하였다. 연구참여자는 비록 과거의 열악했던 상황들 때문에 자녀들을 위해 시설보호를 선택할 수밖에 없었지만 자신의 자녀를 끝까지 데리고 있지 못했다는 끝없는 미안함을 간직하고 있었다. 그러한 마음은 밤낮을 가리지 않고 일에 매달리며 자신을 혹사시키는 일상으로 이어졌다. 비록 물리적으로는 떨어져 있었으나 자녀가 요청했을 때 언제든 달려가는 어머니로서 역할과 책임을 결코 포기하지 않았음이 드러났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 시설보호를 맡긴 어머니의 경험을 통해 시설보호 아동을 지원하는 데 있어 원가족에 대한 고려와 지원이 함께 이루어져야 함을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study deeply explored the mother’s experiences that she could not raise her own children and entrusted them to the child care institutions. Most of the previous studies have covered much of the facility-rearing children, but rarely have access to their parents. This study aimed to illuminate the position of the parents objectively in order to understand the overall situation and context in which the child had to be sent to the facility. The research participant is one mother who had her children in a child care institution and she sent three of four children to the facility. She had to send her children to the facility because it was too hard for her to raise them after divorcing her husband. The study period was from March to July 2017 for about 5 months. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative case study method. The mother, who had to send her children to the facility, was also found to have been hurt by the sorriness and guilt. Though not as much as a separated child, the mother also experienced great pain and sorrow that she could not care for her children at home. However, she did not give up her role as a mother, kept a sorry heart, and constantly contacted her children in difficult situations. Also she promised to meet her children again, and she worked all day without rest. Even though she could not raise a child alone, she was able to survive, but also because of her children. Based on these results, this study suggested that contact with family members and family support plan should be provided so that the children of the facility can be returned to their families.
