Analysis of the Effect of the Type of Authentic Materials to Teach Target Language Culture in the EFL Classroom

국문 초록

본연구의 목적은 전자 또는 비전자로 된 진정성 있는 자료 가운데 어느 유형의 자료가 영어를 외국어로 배우는(EFL) 교실에서 문화 교육에 가장 효과적인가를 알아보기 위함이다. 다른 나라의 문화를 배우고 익히는 것은 요즘과 같은 세계화 시대에 있어 그 중요성이 더해지고 있다. 동시에, 외국어의 완벽한 습득을 위해서는 배우고자 하는 언어의 문화를 습득하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 EFL 교실에서 외국어를 습득하는 동안 문화적 요소에 학생들이 노출되기 위해서는 진정성 있는 자료가 아주 효과적이라는 점을 제안한다. 8명의 영어를 외국어로 배우는(EFL) 학생들이 이 연구에 참여하였고 인터뷰와 관찰의 대상이 되었다. 연구결과에 따르면 진정성 있는 자료 사용에 대해서는 전반적으로 긍정적이었으나, 자료의 유형에 관해서는 특별한 차이는 없었다. 연구 참여자들은 자료유형의 호불호에 대하여 다양한 의견을 표현하였다. 예를 들면, 이해하기 더 쉽다던가, 전자자료를 구하기가 더 쉽다는 점, 온라인 자료가 늘 정확한 것은 아니라는 점 등등이다. 또한, 교실에서의 활용방안과 연구의 제한점 등에 대해서도 다루었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper was to determine which type of authentic materials (AM), electronic or non-electronic, are most effective in teaching target language culture in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Teaching and learning about other countries culture has become more important in this age of globalization. At the same time, it has become clear that in order to attain full proficiency in a foreign language, knowledge of the culture of that language is also essential. This paper suggests that the use of authentic materials in the EFL classroom might be one of the most effective ways to expose students to these cultural factors, while learning a foreign language. Eight university EFL students participated in this study, and were subjected to interviews and observation. Findings indicated that there was a positive general reaction to the use of authentic materials, but little difference in the type to be used. Participants expressed various reasons for choosing one type of authentic materials over the other, including ease of understanding, easy access to electronic texts, online data may not always be factual. The paper concludes with a discussion of the classroom implications and study limitations.
