초·중학교 학생의 다문화 친화적 교육환경에 관한 인식 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 연구의 목적은 다문화 친화적 교육환경에 대한 학생의 인식을 파악하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 서울시에 위치한 다문화 밀집지역과 비밀집 지역의 초·중학교 학생의 다문화 친화적 교육환경 경험을 분석하고 그에 대한 인식을 밝히고자 하였다. 방법 연구방법으로는 초등학교 4개교(밀집 2개교, 비밀집 2개교)와 중학교 4개교(밀집 2개교, 비밀집 2개교)로 총 8개 학교를 대상으로 초등학교 6학년 학생 157명과 중학교 3학년 학생 341명으로 총 498명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 결과 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이주배경학생에 대한 교원의 지원은 중학교에서 다소 낮은 교사의 기대와 관심을 보여주고 있지만, 초·중학교 수준에서 적절하게 제공된 것으로 밝혀졌다. 둘째, 다양하고 균형 잡힌 관점에 기초한 교육과정이 공식적 교육과정을 통해서 제공되어야 한다는 부분에 관해 초·중학교 학생 모두 인지하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 교육 평가 및 절차와 관련해서는 초등학교보다는 중학교에서, 비밀집 지역보다는 밀집 지역에서 적절한 지원이 제공되고 있음을 확인하였다. 넷째, 문화적 다양성을 포용하는 학교 문화를 만들기 위한 노력은 중학교보다는 초등학교에서, 비밀집학교보다는 밀집학교에서 활발하게 나타났다. 결론 초·중학교 학생의 다문화 친화적 학교 환경에 대한 인식을 조사한 결과, 밀집지역 초등학생, 비밀집지역 초등학생, 밀집지역 중학생, 비밀집지역 중학생 순으로 자신의 학교를 다문화 친화적인 학교로 인식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 밀집도의 차이와 학교급을 고려한 모든 학교 수준에서의 다문화 친화적 학교 환경을 만들기 위한 정책적인 지원이 요구된다.

영문 초록

Objectives The This study aims to identify students’ perception of multicultural-friendly educational environment, and to this end, it surveyed elementary and middle school students in districts densely and non-densely populated with multicultural families in Seoul, South Korea. And to this end, it surveyed elementary and middle school stu-dents in districts densely and non-densely populated with multicultural families in Seoul, South Korea. Methods The Students from a total of eight schools - four elementary schools (two in densely populated districts and two in non-densely populated districts) and four middle schools (two in densely populated districts and two in non-densely populated districts) - participated in the survey. A total of 498 students, 157 sixth grade students and 341 middle school students in their third year, gave their responses. Analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0, primarily χ2 tests and two-way ANOVAs. Results According to analysis, first, support from teachers for multicultural students was found to be adequate in elementary and middle schools, although teacher expectations and interest towards them were somewhat low in middle school. Second, it was confirmed that both elementary and middle school students are aware of the need for a formal curriculum that is built on diverse and balanced perspectives. Third, in terms of educational evaluations and procedures, appropriate support was found to be provided more in middle schools than elementary schools, and in those in densely populated districts over their non-dense counterparts. Lastly, efforts to foster a school culture that embraces cultural diversity were more prevalent in elementary schools than in middle schools, and in schools in densely populated districts than those in non-densely populated districts. Conclusions Based on the survey on elementary and middle school students’ perception of multicultural-friendly school environment, in general, elementary school students in densely populated districts were more likely to per-ceive their schools as multicultural-friendly than thought by middle school students in non-densely populated districts. Such findings suggest the need for policy support to create multicultural-friendly school environments at all school levels, in both high- and low-density neighborhoods.
