A Study on the Characteristics of Summary Writing by Korean University Students in the EFL context

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 명시적인 요약문 쓰기 교육을 받은 한국인 대학생 영어 학습자가 작성한 영어 요약문의 주요 특징을 분석하고 요약문 쓰기의 어떤 측면이 어려운지 조사한다. 방법 한국의 한 대학교에서 영어 관련 과목을 수강하는 열두 명의 학생들이 요약문 쓰기 교육을 받은 후 중간고사 과제로 설명문에 해당하는 영어 원문을 읽고 영어 요약문을 작성하였고, 이 요약문이 분석에 사용되었다. 요약문은 평균 536개의 단어로 구성되었다. 학생들이 작성한 요약문은 다섯 개의 요약 전략의 사용과 APA 양식을 활용한 본문 내 인용 방식 측면에서 분석되었다. 결과 분석 결과에 의하면 학생들은 원문의 모든 주요 내용 중 일부를 요약문에 포함하지 않았고 원문에 제시된 불필요한 정보를 일부 포함하였다. 또한, 본문의 내용을 그대로 모방해서 사용하는 반복 전략 보다 바꿔쓰기 전략을 훨씬 빈번히 사용하였지만 다양한 바꿔쓰기 전략을 혼합하여 사용함에 어려움을 겪었고, 바꿔쓰기 과정에서 종종 원문의 의미를 변경하였다. 학생들은 변형 전략과 창조 전략을 제한적으로, 드물게 사용하였고 다수의 학생이 원문에 제시되지 않은 새로운 정보를 요약문에 포함하였다. 본문 내 인용과 관련하여 학생들은 요약문 본문에 원문을 인용하였지만, APA 양식에 맞는 올바른 표기법을 늘 사용하지는 못했다. 결론 이러한 연구 결과를 통해 명시적인 요약문 쓰기 교육을 받은 후에 학생들이 요약 전략을 사용하고 본문 내 원문 인용을 할 때 어떤 것을 잘 할 수 있고 어떤 측면을 여전히 어려워하는지 제시하고, 향후 요약문 쓰기 교육을 위한 교육적 제언을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate key features of English summary writing by Korean university students who have received explicit summary writing instruction, and to examine which aspects of summary writing the students found were challenging and difficult. Methods Twelve students’ summaries of an English expository text produced as a mid-term task in an English course at a university in Korea were analyzed. The mean length of the summaries was approximately 536 words. The summaries were analyzed in terms of the use of five summarization strategies and American Psychological Association style in-text citations. Results The analysis found that the students failed to include all of the source text’s important ideas while including some unnecessary ideas. The students used paraphrasing far more frequently than repetition although they had some difficulty in making use of various paraphrasing strategies and sometimes failed to maintain the original meaning of the source text. The students’ use of transformation and invention strategies was limited and infrequent, and a majority of the students incorporated ideas in their summaries that were not present in the source text. The students cited the source text, but not always correctly. Conclusions The results show what students could do well and what they still found difficult in the use of summarization strategies and in-text citations after explicit summary writing instruction, and provide pedagogical implications for summary writing instruction in the future.
