An Error Analysis of English Writings of Korean University Students with the Assistance of Machine Translators

국문 초록

본 연구는 2018년 가을학기 영어 커뮤니케이션 교과목을 수강한 대학 신입생 17명을 대상으로 영작문 오류의 종류와 학습 도구로서의 기계 번역기의 유용성에 대하여 탐구 하였다. 학생들의 영작문 분석 결과 1548개의 문장 중 847개 (54.7%)의 문장에서 오류가 나타났다. 연구자들은 오류가 있는 문장들을 1차적으로 형태적 오류와 의미적 오류로 분류하였다. 형태적인 오류는 1001개 (52.6%)가, 의미적인 오류는 902개 (47.4%)가 발견되었다. 2차 분석으로 영작문 오류를 11개 항목으로 분석한 결과 동사 381 (20.0%), 문장구조 269 (14.1%), 명사 247 (13.0%), 전치사 203 (10.7%)의 오류 순서로 나타났다. 학생들이 기계번역기를 활용해서 영어 글쓰기를 할 때 어떤 오류 패턴이 나타나는지를 명확하게 이해하는 것은 영작문 지도에 매우 중요하다. 이는 EFL 환경에서 학습자가 학습 도구로서의 기계 번역기를 보다 유용하고 효과적으로 사용함으로써 영어에 대한 직관과 능숙도를 향상 시킬 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

This study involved a course of English Communication, which was taught over a period of 15 weeks during fall semester of 2018. According to the analysis, 847 (54.7%) sentences out of the 1,548 gathered were found to be incorrect, while 701 (45.3%) were correct. From the 1,903 cases of errors that the researchers found, the highest number involved verbs, numbering 381 (20.0%). The second was sentence structure, with 269 cases (14.1%). The third was nouns with 247 (13.0%). This was followed by prepositions, determiners, pronouns, and 5 other categories. Moreover, more than half of the errors, 1001 cases (52.6%), were errors of form, while 902 (47.4%) were errors of meaning. A clear mapping of the errors can help students develop their English writing skills. It is important for students to clearly understand these error patterns, including how and why they occur. This may lead to the effective use of machine translators in an EFL (English as a Second Language) setting. These research results demonstrate a need for students to enhance their English skills to a level that will give them an instinctive grasp of the language.
