국문 초록

본 연구에서는 과학기술자의 진로 선택과 유지 경험의 본질을 탐색하여 과학기술 분야에 흥미와 재능을 지닌 여학생들을 위한 진로 교육의 시사점을 제시하고자 한다. 연구 참여자는 박사 학위를 소지한 30-60대, 현직 남녀 과학기술자 21명으로 2018년 5월-2019년 3월까지 11개월에 걸쳐 면담이 이루어졌다. 진로 발달 단계에 따른 진로 선택과 유지 현상의 본질을 드러내는 주제를 찾고 주제들 사이의 구조 유형을 확정, 이를 연구 참여자들의 목소리를 통해 상세하게 기술하고자 했다. 분석 결과, 진로 발달 시기에 따라 남녀 과학기술자들의 진로 경험과 이해는 변화했으나 일정 수준의 인지 능력과 학업 효능감, 과학기술 분야에 대한 흥미와 재미, 박사 학위에 대한 목표와 기대, 직업에 대한 만족과 소명 의식은 이들의 과학기술 분야 진로 선택과 유지에 핵심 역할을 하고 있으며 이에 대한 성 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 그러나 여성이라는 사실은 여전히 전문 과학기술자 진로에 장벽으로 작용했다. 이는 성에 대한 인식과 역할 기대, 과학기술에 대한 고정관념이라는 사회 문화적 맥락이 아직 유효한 상식으로 통용되기 때문으로 전문 여성 과학기술자의 희소함은 이러한 편견의 순환 고리가 된다. 남녀 과학기술자 간 차이는 사회·문화가 제공하는 기회의 측면으로 추후 이를 고려한 진로 교육과 중재적 개입이 요구된다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to suggest the implications of career education for girls with interests and talents in the field of science and technology by exploring the nature of career choice and maintenance in science and technology. Participants in the study were 21 male1 and female scientists and engineers in the 30s and 60s who hold a doctorate degree, and interviews were conducted over 11 months from May 2018 to March 2019. The purpose of this study was to find a topic that reveals the essence of career selection and retention phenomena according to the stage of career development, to determine the type of structure between the topics, and to describe this in detail through the voices of research participants. As a result of analysis, career experience and understanding of male and female scientists and engineers changed according to career development time, but there was a certain level of cognitive ability and academic efficacy, interest and fun in the field of science and technology, goals and expectations for doctorate degree, satisfaction with career consciousness plays a key role in their selection and maintenance of careers in science and technology, and no gender differences have been found. However, the fact that women are still a barrier to careers in professional science and technology. This is because the social and cultural context of gender perception, role expectations, and stereotypes of science and technology are still used as common sense, so the scarcity of professional female scientists and engineers is a cycle of such prejudice. The difference between male and female scientists and engineers is an aspect of the opportunities provided by society and culture, which requires future career education and intervention.
