영어 학습부진 학생 현황과 부진학생 지도를 위한 교사 준비도 및 요구 조사

국문 초록

초·중등 교육과정에서 영어 교육에 대한 중요성이 강조됨에도 불구하고 초등학교와 중학교에서 영어 학습부진 학생들이 늘어가고 있는 추세이다. 특히, 최근 온라인 수업이 진행되면서 영어 학습부진 학생들이 더욱 증가하고 있다. 하지만, 초등학교와 중학교에서의 일반 학습부진에 대한 연구는 많이 진행된 반면 영어 교과 학습부진에 대한 정의, 진단 기준, 지도방안은 제시되지 않고 있기에 영어 학습부진 문제에 대한 적극적인 대처가 부족한 상황이다. 영어 학습부진이 증가하고 있는 반면 이에 대한 연구가 미흡한 점을 고려하여, 본 연구에서는 영어 학습부진에 대한 초등학교와 중학교 교사의 인식, 영어 학습부진 학생 지도에 대한 교사 준비도와 교사 요구조사를 탐색하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구를 위해 대구·경북 지역 초등학교와 중학교에 근무 중인 여덟 명의 영어 교사와 인터뷰를 실시하고, 178명의 영어 교사들을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 영어에 대한 관심 부족이 영어 학습부진 학생들의 가장 큰 특징이었으며 영어 학습 동기 부여와 영어 학습부진에 대한 진단 및 학습 성취에 대한 평가 방법이 영어 학습부진 연수에 필요한 내용임을 알 수 있었다. 연구결과는 또한 영어 학습부진 학생 지도를 위해서는 교사들이 영어 학습부진의 개념을 이해하고, 학생들의 수준에 맞는 교육과정을 재구성하는 역량이 필요함을 보여주었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 영어 학습부진 학생을 위한 정책과 향후 연구를 위한 제안을 하였다.

영문 초록

Despite the emphasis on the importance of English in the primary and secondary school curriculum, the number of English underachievers at elementary and middle school has increased. Considering the scarcity of research on English-specific underachievement, the present study aims to investigate English teachers notion of English-specific underachievement, their preparedness and needs in teaching underachieving students. Interviews were conducted with eight English teachers and a questionnaire was distributed to 178 English teachers at elementary and middle school teachers in Daegu and Geongbuk regions. The results showed that the teachers tended to identify English underachievers through their personal observation rather than standardized diagnostic tests. They perceived that the lack of interests in English was the most characteristic feature of English underachievers and that how to motivate English underachievers, diagnose, and measure their achievement should be an important element of the teacher training program. The results suggested that a clearer understanding of English-specific underachievement and reconstructing the curriculum to meet individual students levels and needs should be more emphasized to help teachers deal with English underachievers. Suggestions were made for future research and institutional guidelines for English underachievers.
