중년기 초등 여교사의 나이 듦에 대한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 중년기 초등 여교사가 경험하고 있는 나이 듦이라는 현상을 기술하고 이를 해석함으로써 이들의 주관적 실재를 접근 가능하고 이해 가능한 구조로 구성하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 50세에서 52세까지의 교육경력 20년 이상 된 중년기 초등 여교사 6명인 연구 참여자를 심층 면접하였다. 자료 분석은 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학 연구방법론을 참고하여 수행하였는데, 최종적으로 458개의 의미 단위가 분석에 사용되었고, 이 의미 단위를 동일한 의미끼리 묶어 체험의 본질적 구조를 최종적으로 8개의 본질 주제와 17개의 주제로 도출하였다. 중년기 초등 여교사는 나이 듦을 “전과 다른 나의 ‘건강 상태’를 확인함”, “나이 듦에 ‘비껴서고자’ 나만의 대책을 세워봄”, “‘세월의 강물’에 떠밀려진 현재를 목격함”, “‘고진감래의 시간’을 견뎌낸 과거를 회고함”, “‘일터’에서 발효되어 있는 나를 발견함”, “‘가정’에서 내 존재감을 재평가함”, “건강하게 나이들고자 나만의 ‘관계망’을 구축함”, “나답게 나이들고자 ‘익숙함과 낯설음’을 조율해감”으로 체험하였다. 본 연구는 중년기 여성과 특히 중년기 초등 여교사들의 혼란과 갈등을 이해하고 그들이 자신을 수용하는 경험을 촉진시킬 수 있도록 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 과정이 한국 중년기 여성에 대한 이해와 중년기 여성을 위한 정책 수립에 기초 자료로 활용되고, 이 글을 읽는 중년 여성들에게 나이 듦의 과정에 대한 성찰적 기회를 제공하여 자신의 나이 듦을 지혜롭게 대처하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to provide descriptions of the phenomenon of aging as experienced by middle-aged female elementary school teachers, make interpretations, and construct their subjective existences into approachable and understandable structures. This study performed in-depth interviews on 6 middle-aged female elementary school teachers from the ages of 50 to 52 with 20 or more years of educational experience. Data analysis was conducted with references made to Van Manen’s analytical phenomenology research methodology and 458 semantic units were finally used in analysis and of these semantic units, those that had the same meaning were tied together and the essential structure of the participants’ experiences was ultimately deduced to 8 essential themes and 17 themes. Middle aged female elementary school teachers experienced aging as “recognizing that my ‘state of health’ is different from before”, “making my own plans to ‘try to deflect’ aging”, “witnessing the present in which I have been drifted away by the ‘river waters of time’”, “looking back on a past in which I have endured through ‘times of pleasure after pain’”, “discovering myself having been fermented at my ‘workplace’”, “reassessing my sense of existence in the ‘home’”, “constructing my own ‘relationship network’ to age healthily”, “mediating between ’the familiar and the unfamiliar’ to age while being true to myself’. This study will be able to aid counselors to understand the confusion and conflicts of middle-aged women or female teachers to promote their experience of accepting themselves. Also, it will be able to provide implications to the presentation of direction for policies that can intervene on behalf of middle-aged female teachers for educational policy makers or field managers and by providing introspective opportunities on the aging process to those individuals reading this, it is anticipated that they will be able to wisely prepare for their own aging.
