국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 세계사 교과서 속 미국 자국사 교육의 의미와 서술 내용을 검토하고, 국민으로서의 정체성 함양과 세계시민으로서의 역량을 키우는 역사교육의 두 가지 목적을 실현하기 위한 역사교육 방안을 찾아보기 위함이다. 미국의 자국사는 다양한 민족적·인종적 정체성을 지닌다는 점에서 축소된 세계사의 모습을 하고 있다. 따라서 다양한 주체의 역사를 이해하는 동시에 미국인의 정체성을 기르기 위한 역사교육 방안이 필요하다. 세계사 교과서 속 자국사의 주요 내용을 보면 서유럽 중심의 미국인의 정체성과 미국의 중요한 가치로서 민주주의에 대해 다루고 있다. 그러나 교과서 속 발문을 통해 서유럽 중심 백인 이외의 다른 주체의 입장에서 역사적 사실을 이해하도록 하고 있으며, 자국의 이익과 민주주의의 가치가 상충하는 역사적 행위에 대한 새로운 이해를 모색하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 발문에서 제시한 문제를 해결하는 과정은 미국의 정체성과 가치에 대한 다양성을 이해하는 결과를 가져올 수 있다. 따라서 발문을 통한 학습은 다문화적 관점에서 세계사와 자국사를 이해하기 위한 방안이 될 수 있다고 보았다.

영문 초록

This study examined the meaning of education the national history in world history textbook and what contents and perspectives of American history are describing in a world history textbook of United States of America. The purpose of paper is to find educational ways to realize two goals: fostering national identity and capacity as a global citizen. As an object of this analysis the World History textbook issued by Prentice Hall, U.S.A. was selected. The history of the U.S.A can be described as a reduced world history in that it has diverse ethnic and racial identities. Therefore, there is a need for a history education method to understand the history of various subjects and to develop the American identity. After reviewing the contents of textbook, it can be seen that the descriptions of American history are mainly European-centered white man, and American identity is also being sought in Western Europe. Although the main texts show that the Americans came from the Western Europe, the questions are proposed as a measure to understand and harmonize the histories of native Americans and immigrants with the Western Europeans. Reflecting this task questions of open type are suggested mostly in the textbook. Students understand the relationship of cultures from the world history asking and answering these questions by themselves. Through this process, it can reflect multicultural views and expand understanding of world history.
