학습자의 비판적 문해력 향상을 위한 다문화교양교육 콘텐츠 분석

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 학습자의 비판적 문해력 배양을 위해 고전과 현대 문학작품을 연계하여 다문화적 읽기와 분석을 시도하였다. 방법 누스바움이 제시한 대상화의 과정을 토대로, 학습자들이 어렵게 생각하는 고전과 이와 상호텍스트적인 현대의 작품을 선택하여 작품 속 인물과 현재의 나를 연계하여 접근해 봄으로써 고전이 드러내는 사회적 쟁점을 현대의 관점에서 해석해 보았다. 이를 위하여 고전 희극인 셰익스피어의 <베니스의 상인>과 셰익스피어의 <로미오와 줄리엣>을 전유한 드레이퍼의 <로미에와 훌리오>를 다문화적 관점에서 분석하였다. 결과 <베니스의 상인>은 문화와 종교가 다른 샤일록과 같은 인물이 처한 상황과 정황에 모순은 없었는지, 실현될 수 있었던 진정한 정의는 무엇이었는지를 고민하는 기회를 독자/학습자에게 제공하였다. <로미에와 훌리오>는 등장인물의 인종과 성별을 바꾸는 전복적 시도로 현대성을 확보하고 있고 사랑을 가로막는 요인으로 인종적 문화적 갈등을 도입하고 해결을 시도함으로써 다문화에 대한 독자/학습자들의 성찰을 유인하였다. 결론 상호 텍스트적 독서를 통해, 학습자들은 피부색, 인종, 그리고 종교, 혹은 고향과 같은 생태적, 문화적 배경과 같은 타고난 특성으로 인해 한 개인이 어떻게, 그리고 얼마나 잘못 취급될 수 있는지, 그리고 그와 같은 사고가 얼마나 비약적인 편견인지를 확인할 수 있어, <베니스의 상인>과 <로미에와 훌리오>는 비판적, 문화적 문해력을 함양하는데 유의미한 교육 매체가 될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purposes of this study were to read and analyze classic and modern literature in order to cultivate critical literacy of learners. Methods As Nussbaum’s process of objectification suggests, critical lteracy skills can be developed through reading the classics by focusing on the characters and social problems they confront in the works with a contemporary persepective that learners have. Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Draper’s Romiette and Julio, which purposely borrowed from Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, were read and analyzed with multicultural perspective. Results Reading Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice from a multicultural perspective provides reader/learner an opportunity to ponder whether there was no contradiction in the situation of a person like Shylock who is from different cultures and has different religion, and what might be the true justice that could have been realized. Draper s Romiette and Julio induces the reader/learner to reflect on multiculturalism by introducing racial and cultural conflict as a factor of disturbing juvenile’s love, instead of ‘star-crossed’ fate. Conclusions With comprehensive and interrelated reading of these two literary works, learners can identify the prejudicial way of thinking that how the character, that is, an individual could be wrongly treated in his/her present community only because his/her natural as well as cultural traits such as skin color, race, religion, and hometown. Therefore, it can be said that reading The Merchant of Venice and Romiette and Julio with multicultural perspective is effective, meaningful education contents for cultivating critical and cultural literacy.
