위기사건 경험 노인의 정체성 재구성과정에 관한 생애사적 내러티브 탐구

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 부상을 경험한 한 노인이 그 사건을 계기로 삶을 성찰해가는 일련의 과정을 당사자의 관점에서 이해하고 의미화하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 갑자기 맞닥뜨린 부상이라는 위기상황 속에서 연구 참여자가 어떻게 삶을 회상하고 그 의미를 재구성해 나가는지 구술 및 대화 자료, 참여관찰 자료를 통해 분석하였다. 연구 참여자는 자신의 상황을 이해하고 그것을 극복하는 전략을 형성해 나갔으며, 그 과정은 ‘죽기 살기로 살아내기’, ‘서서히 죽어가는 과정’, ‘지나온 삶 돌아보기’, ‘다시 살아내기’로 정의할 수 있다. 노인은 부상을 통해 직면한 신체적 고통과 불가피해진 의존적 생활에 대해 ‘죽기 살기로 살아내기’, 변화된 상황을 상실과 죽음의 과정으로 받아들이는 ‘서서히 죽어가기’, 삶을 통합적으로 재구성하는 ‘지나간 삶 되돌아보기’, 삶에 새로운 의미와 목적을 부여하는 ‘다시 살아내기’의 과정을 통해 자신의 삶을 깊이 통찰하고 새로운 관점을 가지고 삶의 방식을 전환해 나간다. 이 연구를 통해 살펴본 바에 의하면, 노년에 직면하는 육체적·정신적 쇠락, 상실, 단절 등은 생애과정에서 형성된 정체성의 위기를 초래하기도 하는 한편 노년의 위기 상황을 살아나가면서 노년의 정체성을 재형성하게 하는 전환적 계기로 작동하기도 한다. 노인들에게 위기사건과 같은 상실 경험이 삶의 연속성 회복의 계기로 작동하도록 하기 위해서는 물리적 차원의 지원과 더불어 삶을 공유하고 소통함으로써 삶의 의미를 재구성할 수 있는 대화적 관계의 확장이 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand and mean from the perspective of the parties a series of processes in which an old woman who has experienced an injury looking back on her life with the incident. For this purpose, I analyzed how participant of the study recalls her lives and reconstruct her meanings in a crisis of sudden injuries based on oral data, dialogue data, and observation data. Participant of the study understood her situation and formed strategies to overcome it, and the process can be defined as “living desperately to die or live,” “slowly dying process,” “looking back on past life,” and “living again.” The elderly take a deep insight into her own lives and change her way of life with a new perspective through the process of ‘living desperately to die or live’ for the physical pain and inevitable dependent life faced through injuries, “slowly dying” that accepts the changed situation as a process of loss and death, “looking back on past life,” that integrally reconstructs life, and “living again” that gives new meaning and purpose to life. According to this study, physical and mental decline, loss, and disconnection facing at old age sometimes lead to a crisis of identity formed in the course of life, while they also work as a turning point to reshape the identity of old age while surviving the crisis of old age. In order for the loss experience, such as a crisis incident to the elderly to act as an opportunity to restore the continuity of life, it will be necessary to expand the conversational relationship that can reconstruct the meaning of life by sharing and communicating life, along with support at the physical level.
