국문 초록

본 연구는 학습 동기 증진 언어하기 활동(Motivational Languaging Activity)을 통한 영어 학습 동기 질적 사례 연구로, 저소득층 하위권 중학생의 영어 학습 동기 변화와 그 원인을 탐구하는 것을 연구 목적으로 한다. 연구 실행을 위해, 서울시 금천구에 위치한 지역아동센터에서 중학교 1학년 여학생 4명을 대상으로 9주 동안 사례 연구를 진행하였다. 연구자는 학생들의 학습 태도를 관찰하고 활동 종료 후 반구조화 인터뷰를 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 근거이론을 바탕으로 분석되었다. 연구 결과, 저소득층 하위권 학생들의 영어 학습 무동기의 원인은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어 학습에 대한 부정적인 태도 지속 및 미래의 꿈과 연계성 부족. 둘째, 부모의 관심 결여. 셋째, 학습 방법 및 사용 능력 부재이다. 이러한 연구 결과는 저소득층 하위권 학생을 지도할 때 상기한 원인들을 고려하여 세심하게 지도할 필요가 있으며 학습 동기 증진 언어하기 활동과 더불어 학생들에게 미래의 자아를 탐색하는 시간의 빈도를 높여 제공하고, 이상적 제2언어 자아와 영어 학습을 연관시키는 것이 영어 학습 동기 향상에 중요함을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines low-income middle school students’ English learning motivation through the motivational languaging activity (MLA). The MLA is a classroom-friendly activity in which learners can contemplate their reason for studying English and objectively reflect on themselves. This activity aims to discern students’ motivation for learning English, determine learning objectives, and consequently engage in learning by encouraging them to think of their ideal L2 self for the future. For this study, four low-income middle school girls in the community children learning center in Guemcheon-gu participated in the MLA for six times, nine weeks. Following the MLA, the students were interviewed. These interviews revealed no significant improvement in students’ learning motivation. The interviews indicated several reasons explaining this issue: 1) negative attitudes towards studying English and a lack of connection between studying and their future goals, 2) a lack of emphasis on English learning from learners’ parents, and 3) a lack of ability in using effective learning methods. This study implies that parents and teachers should continually focus on students’ dreams and provide successful experiences and positive feedback to students. Additionally, teachers should actively develop students’ learning environments and teach effective learning methods to each student according to their learning styles to increase students’ learning motivations for studying English.
