오랑캐에게 예절을 배우다!

국문 초록

이 연구는 ‘동방예의지국’을 자처한 한국에 전해진 서양오랑캐(洋夷)의 두 층위의 기독교윤리(서학윤리·개신교윤리)에 대한 무시·배척과 적극적 수용의 흔적을 추적하였다. 기독교윤리와 만남에 주목한 이유는 근대전환기에 이르러 예(禮)로 표현된 유교사상과 교육에서 서양의 윤리와 교육으로 전이되기 시작했기 때문이다. 그 과정을 이해하기 위해 타문화 사람들을 오랑캐라 여긴 조선후기 지식인들의 기독교윤리사상(서학윤리사상)에 대한 반응을 무시와 배척이라는 관점에서 들여다보았고, 개화기 지식인들이 보인 반응에 대해 새로운 윤리를 갈구하는 적극적 수용의 자세라고 보았다. 또한 한국기독교윤리학의 외연을 서학윤리와 개신교선교사들의 저작까지 확장시켜서 개항기 또는 대한제국기에 기독교윤리가 성리학적 세계를 구축 하고 있던 예를 어떻게 대신할 수 있었는가에 대해 기독교계 학교에서 진행된 윤리학 강의에서 찾아보았다. 서양오랑캐가 전한 기독교윤리는 근대전환기의 수신학이나 윤리학교과서에서 전달하고자 하는 성격과 차원이 다른 윤리라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study traced the processes of neglect and exclusion and the active acceptance of two levels of, which were handed down to Korea, claimed to be “the country of courteous people in the East.” The reason for paying attention to the meeting between Korean people and the ethics of the West is that Confucian thoughts and education began to shift from Western ethics and education during the modern transition period in Korea. To understand this process, this study looked at the responses of the late Joseon’s intellectuals to the Christian ethics (Western school ethics), who regarded Western people as O-rang-kae, from the perspective of ignoring and ostracizing, and examined the reactions of intellectuals during the enlightenment period as an active acceptance of new ethics. In addition, this study explored how to replace the example of Christian ethics from the ethics of Neo-Confucianism during the opening period of enlightenment or the Korean Empire by extending the externalities of Korean Christian ethics to Western school ethics and the works of Protestant missionaries. Thus, this study confirmed that Christian ethics, delivered by the Western O-rang-kae, was different from other materials of ethics related to the characteristics and dimensions of ethics during the modern transition period in Korea.
