일본군 ‘위안부’ 문제의 연극적 재현과 ‘포스트-기억 세대’의 시선

국문 초록

본고는 마리안느 허쉬가 말한 ‘포스트메모리(Post-memory)’ 개념을 경유하여 김민정 희곡 <하나코>에 나타난 일본군 ‘위안부’ 문제의 연극적 재현의 양상을 살피고 이를 통해 ‘포스트-기억 세대’ 양식으로의 변화와 그 의의를 고찰하였다. 김민정 희곡 <하나코>는 1997년 국내에 알려져 큰 사회적 파장을 일으켰던 캄보디아의 ‘훈 할머니’ 사연을 바탕으로 창작된 작품이다. ‘위안부’ 피해 생존자들의 증언과 실제 있었던 기록을 토대로 하면서도 이 극은 ‘증언과 실화의 레토릭’에 갇히거나 피해자의 고통을 단순히 재현하는 것에 그치지 않고, ‘위안부’ 문제를 역사화하면서 우리 사회가 가졌던 태도와 시선에 대해 문제를 제기한다. 해결되지 않은 역사인 일본군 ‘위안부’의 역사를 바라보는 ‘포스트-기억 세대’의 시선과 문제의식은 이 극의 서사를 추동시켜나가는 가장 주요한 동력으로 작용한다. 역사적 시·공간의 물리적 경계, 증언과 허구적 상상력을 자유롭게 넘나들며 이전 세대의 트라우마적 사건을 새로운 방식으로 재구성해나가고 있는 이 극은 ‘위안부’ 피해자들이 경험한 과거의 고통뿐만 아니라 식민 이후 지금까지도 지속되고 있는 ‘포스트 트라우마’의 문제를 조명함으로써 ‘위안부’ 문제가 지나간 과거의 역사가 아닌 ‘지금, 이곳’에서 계속되고 있는 현재의 사건임을 보여준다. ‘위안부’의 역사를 개인의 아픔으로 축소하거나 ‘민족적 수난’이라는 거대 담론으로 바라보지 않고, 기존의 서사에서 답습해왔던 ‘근친성’ 혹은 ‘육친적 상상력’의 한계를 넘어 ‘위안부’ 역사의 상흔과 고통을 공동체의 윤리적, 실천적 문제로 확장하여 바라보고 연루의 감각을 생성해나가고자 하는 이러한 시도와 작업은 문화적 재현을 통해 ‘위안부’의 역사와 고통을 새로운 방식으로 사유하고, 연대하고, 기억하고자 하는 포스트-기억 세대 작가의 새로운 윤리적, 미학적 탐색으로도 바라볼 수 있다

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the patterns of theatrical reproduction of the of Japanese Military “Comfort Women” issue in Kim Min-jeong’s play, Hanako, based on the concept of “post-memory” by Marianne Hirsch, thus looking into its change into a “post-memory generation” style and its social and cultural implications. Kim’ s Hanako w as w ritten based on t he s tory o f “Leng Hun” f rom Cambodia that was introduced in South Korea in 1997 and created huge social ripple effects. Instead of remaining at the level of trapping itself within the “rhetoric of testimonies and true stories” or simply reproducing the pain of victims based on the testimonies of surviving victims in the “Comfort Women” system and the records of actual events, the play turned the issue of “Comfort Women” into a historical one and raised a problem with society’s attitude and eyes. The eyes and problematic consciousness of the “post-memory generation” looking at the history of the Japanese Military “Comfort Women,” whose history has not been resolved yet, work as the most important driving force to move the play’s narrative forward. The play reorganizes the traumatic event of the previous generation in a new way by moving freely beyond the physical boundary of historical time and space and between testimonies and fictional imagination. It sheds light on the issue of “post-trauma” that has continued since the colonial days as well as the past suffering of the victims of “Comfort Women,” showing that the issue of Japanese Military “Comfort Women” is a current event continuing “here, now” rather than an account of the past. The play tries to expand the wounds and pain of the “Comfort Women” history into the ethical and practical issue of the community and create a sense of complicity beyond the limitations of the “incestuous nature” or “blood relative imagination” that was imitated in the old narratives instead of reducing the history of “Comfort Women” to personal suffering or looking at it as part of the massive discourse about the “national hardship.” Such an attempt and work can be understood as a new ethical and aesthetical inquiry by a writer of the post-memory generation to contemplate, connect, and remember the history and pain of Japanese Military “Comfort Women” in a new way through its cultural reproduction.
