죽음인식에 따른 죽음태도 분석

국문 초록

이 논문은 자신에게 소중한 사람의 죽음을 어떻게 맞이해야 하는가의 죽음태도 문제를 성찰한다. 평소 죽음에 대해 회피하며 살더라도 가까운 지인이나 소중한 사람의 죽음이 다가올 때는 더 이상 회피할 수 없다. 이를 위해 죽음을 이해할 수 있는 죽음교육이 필요하다. 인문학 기반의 죽음교육을 위해 문학 작품 속의 주인공의 죽음태도를 철학적으로 분석하여 죽음태도의 문제를 탐구한다. 로맹 가리의 자기 앞의 생의 주인공 모모가 직면한 죽음을 중심으로 죽음에 대한 태도 문제를 실존철학자 칼 야스퍼스의 철학으로 분석한다. 모모의 죽음태도는 야스퍼스의 두 가지 죽음인식으로 뒷받침한다. 하나는 허망한 종말로서의 죽음이고 다른 하나는 자기 자신이기를 선택하고 결단하는 계기로서의 죽음이다. 야스퍼스의 용어를 빌리면 전자는 죽음을 ‘상황’으로, 후자는 ‘한계상황’으로 인식하는 것이다. 모모가 체험하는 두 가지 죽음인식과 그것이 야기하는 죽음태도의 차이를 야스퍼스 철학으로 분석함으로써, 문학과 철학을 융합하여 죽음에 대한 태도를 성찰하고, 실존의 자기 발견과 삶의 진정성 문제를 탐구함으로써 삶을 위한 죽음교육의 장을 열고자 한다.

영문 초록

The current paper reflects on the issue of attitudes toward death. More specifically, how to face the death of a loved one. In general, most people avoid the topic of death in their daily lives until, that is, a close acquaintance or important person passes away. In preparation for this inevitability, education on the topic of death is much needed. For this purpose, this paper will conduct a philosophical analysis of fiction novel protagonist’s attitudes towards death as they encounter the subject, in order to lay a foundation for humanities-based education on the subject. Analysis centers upon the protagonist Momo in Romain Gary’s novel, La Vie devant soi (1975). The character’s attitude toward death and personal encounter with the death of a loved one will be analyzed through the framework of philosopher Karl Jasper’s theories. Momo’s attitude can be explained with Jaspers’ dual perceptions toward death: one is death as a futile end, and the other is death as an opportunity to define oneself and make decisions accordingly. In Jaspers’ own words, one is to perceive death as a “situation” while the other is to see it as a “boundary situation.” The analysis is an amalgam of both literary and philosophical approaches towards attitudes toward death, for the objective of discovering the existential self and true meaning of life, and ultimately discover the means of educating the public about death as a part of life.
