초등학교 아동의 전반적 자아존중감 변화양상과 관련 변인 탐색

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 초1에서 초4까지의 전반적 자아존중감(Global self-esteem) 변화 양상과 이에 미치는 아동의 삶의 만족도/행복도, 부모양육태도(온정적 태도 및 통제, 감독) 및 부,모 각각의 자아존중감, 학교에서의 친구 및 교사와의 관계가 자아존중감에 미치는 효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 2015년부터 2018년까지 얻어진 한국아동패널 8, 9, 10, 11차 자료를 사용하여 자아존중감 문항의 요인구조를 밝히고, 자아존중감 문항이 매년 동일하게 해석될 수 있는지 확인하고자 측정동일성 검정을 실시하였다. 이후 2수준 다층성장모형을 구축하여, 시간에 따라 변화하는 아동의 삶의 만족도, 부모감독, 그리고 시간선형을 변수를 1수준에는 넣고, 성별 및 부모양육태도(온정적 태도 및 통제) 및 부와 모의 자아존중감, 학교에서의 친구 및 교사와의 관계 변수를 2수준에 사용하였다. 결과 초등학교 1학년부터 4학년 기간 동안 자아존중감은 동일한 비율(선형변화)로 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며, 초1 시기의 자아존중감은 여학생이 남학생보다 높았다. 그러나 모형에 사용된 관련 변수를 통제한 후, 초기 값의 성차는 사라졌으나, 평균과 변화율에 있어서 개인차가 있었다. 아동의 전반적인 삶에 대한 만족도, 또래와의 긍정적인 관계는 자아존중감에 정적인 영향을 주었다. 특히 학교공부, 외모, 가족관계, 친구, 학교 및 일상의 생활과 관련된 문항으로 이루어진 아동의 삶에 대한 만족도가 아동의 자아존중감에 미치는 효과는 매우 컸다. 결론 전반적 자아존중감 제고를 위하여 아동의 삶과 관련한 아동의 만족도 제고가 필요하다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study was to find out the pattern of Korean elementary school children’s global self-esteem over four time points (1st grade to 4th grade). In addition, the effect of such variables as children’s overall satisfaction with their life, parental childrearing practices (parents’ support and control, monitoring), parents’ self-esteem, and the children’s relationship with friends and teachers on children’s self-esteem were investigated using the data of the Panel Study on Korean Children (2015-2018), waves 8 through 11. Methods Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to find out the factor structure of the self-esteem items. Metric invariance assumption was tested to find out whether the same items were interpreted in the same way across the four time points. After that, a two-level growth model was constructed with such time-varying variables as children’s satisfaction with their lives, and parental overseeing behaviors, and time linear term at level 1 and children s gender, children’s relationship with their teacher and with their peers, and parents’ child-rearing practices at level 2. Results Children’s global self-esteem increased linearly, at a consistent rate over four time points. At grade 1, female children’s self-esteem was higher than that of male children. However, controlling for the variables used in the model, the differences in mean and rate of change in self-esteem between male and female children were not statistically significant. Among the variables, children’s overall life satisfaction and positive relationship with friends were statistically significantly associated with children’s global self-esteem. The effect of children’s overall life satisfaction, which was a composite score of items such as children’s satisfaction with their studies, appearance, family, peers, school life, and everyday life, was statistically and practically significant. Conclusions In order to enhance children’s global self-esteem, enhancing children’s overall life satisfaction is suggested.
