A Case Study Exploring College Students’ Perceptions of Remote English Speaking Class

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 코로나19 상황 속에서 말하기에 중점을 둔 교양영어 과목이 비대면으로 어떻게 진행되었으며 그에 대해 학생들이 어떻게 반응하였는지를 살펴보는데 목적을 두고 있다. 방법 이를 위하여 리커트 척도, 다중 선택, 개방 질문으로 구성된 설문조사가 진행되었다. 8개 분반 동일한 교양영어 수업을 수강한 학생 중 총 150명이 설문에 참여하였으며, 이는 기술통계와 정성분석 기법을 적용하여 분석되었다. 결과 자료 분석 결과 학생들은 줌(Zoom)을 이용한 실시간 화상 수업과 사전 녹화 강의를 병행한 비대면 영어 말하기 수업에 대해 대체로 만족하였다. 학생들은 녹화강의와 실시간 화상 수업이 지닌 각각의 다른 활용도, 즉 자기 보속 학습 및 상호작용을 통한 언어 출력의 기회 등에 긍정적이 반응을 보였다. 또한 학생들은 실시간 및 비실시간 방식의 병행적 수업이 각각의 취약점을 상호 보완하였으며 이는 자신들의 영어 말하기 학습에 긍정적인 영향을 준 것으로 인식하였다. 하지만 비대면으로 영어 말하기 수업을 수강하는 것에 대한 부정적 측면으로 화상 수업 시 의무적인 영어 사용 및 기술적 결함에 대한 불안감 등이 부정적인 측면으로 언급되었다. 결론 이 연구 결과를 바탕으로 비대면 영어 말하기 수업의 효율성 증진을 위한 방안이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Objectives This case study examines how a speaking-focused general English course was conducted remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation and how college students perceived their learning experience. Methods The main source of data was a survey questionnaire, consisting of Likert-scale, multiple choice, and open-ended questions. A total of 150 mostly first-year college students taking the course responded, and descriptive statistics and general qualitative analysis methods were used for data analysis. Results The findings of the study indicate that the students showed overall satisfaction with their remote English speaking classes which adopted both synchronous (i.e., real-time video conferencing using Zoom) and asynchronous (i.e., pre-recorded videos) modes of instruction. The students responded positively not only to how each mode served unique purposes such as increasing opportunities to produce English output and promoting self-paced learning respectively but also to how the combination of both modes created synergy effects by supplementing each other. Some negative sides of their remote learning experiences are discussed as well. Conclusions Based on the findings, some implications are presented that can help instructors facilitate more effective remote English speaking classes.
