19세기말 서양선교사 게일의 텬로력뎡 한글 번역과 김준근 텬로력뎡 삽도의 의미 고찰

국문 초록

텬로력뎡은 영국인 존 번연(J.Bunyan)이 저술한 “The Pilgrim’s Progress”를 조선에 머물러 있던 선교사 게일(J.S.Gale)이 한국어로 번역한 기독교 소설이다. 김준근은 텬로력뎡을 총 42장면의 삽도로 도해하는 작업을 했다. 김준근에 의해 제작과정을 거친 텬로력뎡 삽도는 19세기 서구인이 인식한 한국의 모습이 반영되었을 뿐만 아니라 텍스트에 회화적 요소를 가미한 문학과 미술의 콜라보를 보여준 최초의 번역문학으로서의 의의가 있다. 요컨대 텬로력뎡 삽도에는 19세기 서구의 기독교 문화와 한국적 정서가 교차되어 드러난다. 삽도의 이미지에 내재된 서구중심의 오리엔탈리즘, 제국주의, 문화권력의 주체자로서의 선교활동이 텍스트를 설명하는 삽도에 의해 더욱 분명하게 드러나고 있다. 아울러 개항 이후 활발해진 근대제도와 매체의 도입으로 인해 텬로력뎡의 출판과 보급 역시 활기를 띄었으며 한국 화가가 동참한 텬로력뎡 삽도는 서양의 종교 및 사상이 한국인들에게 내면화되고 토착화되는 데에 큰 영향력을 주었다. 게일의 텬로력뎡과 김준근의 텬로력뎡 삽도의 콜라보(collaboration)는 서양근대번역물과 한국전통미술이 교류하고 유통되는 과정을 알 수 있는 의미 있는 작품으로 평가할 수 있다. 텬로력뎡 삽도는 한국에 들어온 선교사들이 개신교를 전파하기 위해 조선의 시각이미지를 도구화하여 그들의 문화권력을 행사한 흔적을 발견할 수 있다.

영문 초록

As it is well known, ChunRoYukJung s original novel is “ The Pilgrim’s Process” written by a British writer John Bunyan in 1678, and it was translated into Korean by a missionary J. S. Gale in 1895. Gale also requested Chosun s genre painter Kim Joon-Geun to draw illustration for “ChunRoYukJung” . Kim Joon-Geun, who was a famous genre painter of Chosun at that time, drew 42 paintings about narratives of “Chun RoYukJung” . The Western ideology of orientalism, imperialism and missionaries who can be represented as a leaders of culture powers were all reflected in “ChunRoYukJung-the drawings” , and it was described more vividly as it contained pictures that helped understanding of the text. In addition to that, as printing techniques and modern technology were introduced to Korea after opening the ports, the publication and distribution of “ChunRoYukJung” seemed to be quite influential. Even though it was produced by a foreigner s purpose, “ChunRoYukJung-the drawings” drawn by a Chosun s artist were internalized in Chosun citizens to a certain level. In other word, as “ChunRoYukJung-the drawings” was a mixture of text and drawings, it definitely helped the distribution of Christianity in Chosun. Therefore, missionaries who came to Chosun after opening the ports used visual images to spread their religion in foreign land and wielded their cultural power.
