의과대학 학생들의 생명과 죽음에 대한 은유적 표상

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 국내 의과대학 재학생들의 생명과 죽음에 대해 형성하고 있는 은유적 이미지를 탐색하였다. 연구목적 달성을 위하여 남부권 소재 한 의과대학 학생 435명으로부터 생명과 죽음에 대한 개방형 설문지를 활용하여 은유적인 이미지를 수집하였다. 수집된 질적 자료들은 반복적 비교분석법을 통해 귀납적으로 분석되었 으며, 그 결과 생명과 죽음 모두에 대해 ‘생물학․의학 관련 은유’, ‘감정 관련 은유’, ‘사회․문화 관련 은유’, ‘추상적 상징 관련 은유’의 네 가지 유형으로 범주화 해 볼수 있었다. 보다 세부적으로는 생물학․의학 관련 은유’에서 생명의 경우는 ‘발생과 성장’, ‘항상성’, ‘균형과 질서’, ‘생기와 역동성’이, 죽음의 경우에는 ‘쇠락’, ‘항상성의 붕괴’, ‘소멸과 분해’로 범주화 되었다. ‘감정 관련 은유’에서 생명의 경우는 ‘감정의 표현’, ‘자연 속에서의 생동감’이, 죽음의 경우는 ‘슬픔’, ‘생각과 감정의 소멸’로 범주화 되었다. ‘사회․문화 관련 은유’ 중 생명의 경우는 ‘더불어 삶, 무리 속의 생명’과 ‘종교적 상징’, ‘생일’이, 죽음의 경우는 ‘관계의 단절’, ‘장례 그리고 사후세계’로 범주화 되었다. 마지막으로 ‘추상적 상징 관련 은유’에서 생명의 경우는 ‘타오르는 불꽃’, ‘교류와 순환’, ‘주체성, 의지 그리고 가능성’이, 죽음의 경우는 ‘무와 소멸’, ‘완전한 어둠’, ‘끝이 아닌 죽음’, ‘돌이킬 수 없고 불가항력적인 순간’으로 범주화 되었다. 이러한 생명과 죽음에 대한 다양한 은유적 이미지는 의학교육과정에서 의과대학생들의 생사관 확립을 위한 교육에 대한 기초자료로 활용될 것이다.

영문 초록

In this study, we investigated metaphorical image forming about the life and death of students of medical school in Korea. To accomplish the research purpose, we collected metaphorical images and description about life and death from 435 students of medical schools in southern region. The collected qualitative data were analyzed in an inductive way through the constant comparative analysis. As a result, students’ metaphoric images fall into four broad categories: biology and medicine, emotion, society and culture, and abstract symbol. More specifically, in the biological and medical metaphors, images of life were divided into four categories: generation and growth , homeostasis , balance and order , vitality and dynamics’, and images of death were divided into three categories: ‘decline’, ‘collapse of homeostasis’, extinction and decomposition . In the case of metaphors related with situation an state, life was represented as expression of emotion and vitality in the nature , and death was represented as sadness and disappearance of emotion . In the case of metaphors related to society and culture, life was represented as living together in community’ and religious symbol’, ‘birthday , and death was represented as disconnection of relationship , funeral and afterlife . Finally, in the abstract symbolic metaphor, life is described as ’flaming fire’, ‘exchange and circulation’, ‘subjecthood, will and possibility’, and death is described as ‘nothing and extinction’, ‘total darkness’, ‘death which is not the end’, ‘irrevocable and irresistible moments’. The various metaphorical images of life and death will be used as basic date in medical education for improving medical students’ perspective on life and death.
