A Closer Look at What Makes a Proficient Korean EFL Vocabulary Learner

국문 초록

본 연구는 우수한 한국 EFL 어휘 학습자의 특색을 살펴보고자, 세 명의 우수한 그리고 두 명의 덜 우수한 학습자를 인터뷰하였다. 다섯 연구 참여자는 34명의 대학생중에서 번역 퀴즈 점수를 바탕으로 선정되었으며, 이 퀴즈의 주안점은 영어 고빈도 단어(high-frequency words)를 얼마나 잘 사용하는지를 측정하는 것이다. 인터뷰 자료는 축 코딩 (axial coding)화 되었고, 자료 분석 타당성은 응답자 확인 (respondent checking) 절차를 통해 점검하였다. 인터뷰를 통해서 우수한 어휘 학습자들은 다음과 같은 공통분모를 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다: (a) 우수한 학습자들은 일개 단어를 잘안다는 것의 의미를 충분히 이해하고 있으며, 나아가 어휘가 언어 학습에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지해야 한다고 여긴다. (b) 그들은 사전을 적극 사용하면서 자신의 언어 학습에 최대한 유리하게 활용하고 있다. (c) 그들은 비언어민에게 실제적 도움을 주는 학습자 사전(learner’s dictionary)을 선호한다. (d) 그들은 여가 독서(pleasure reading)를 통해서 어휘력을 정교하게 하는 자신만의 방식을 갖고 있다. 반면 덜 우수한 학습자들이 보이는 한 가지 공통점으로, 학습자 사전에 대해서 전혀 모르고 있는 점을 꼽을 수 있다. EFL 어휘 지도 면에서 이번 연구가 제시하는 시사점 중 하나로는, 효과적인 사전 사용이 보기만큼 쉽지 않기에, 교사는 사전에 담겨 있는 각종 정보를 고루 사용하는 것을 분명히 가르칠 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study is an investigation of what makes a good EFL vocabulary learner by interviewing three proficient and two less proficient learners. The five interviewees were selected out of 34 undergraduates primarily based on a translation quiz intended to assess how well they used English high-frequency words. The interview data were axial coded, and then respondent checking procedures were used to check the validity of the data analyses. Student interviews reveal that four common denominators have helped proficient learners successfully navigate the path to vocabulary learning: (a) They believe that vocabulary outweighs all others in importance. This belief is based largely on their adequate knowledge of what it takes to know a word. (b) They are avid users of dictionaries who know how to use them to best advantage. (c) They prefer learners’ dictionaries that are of enormous help to non-native speakers of English. (d) They have their own way of refining vocabulary skills through pleasure reading. One of the things that characterizes the two less proficient learners is that they have no idea what a learner’s dictionary is. The study’s findings have implications for the way EFL teachers assist unsuccessful vocabulary learners. One such example would be to clearly explain how to access every information a dictionary has to offer since using a dictionary resourcefully might not be as easy as it seems.
