Motivational Analysis of Korean Undergraduate and Graduate Students EFL Learning Anxiety

국문 초록

목적 본 연구의 목적은 한국 학생들이 외국어로써 영어를 학습하는데 있어서 중요한 방해요소 중 하나로 작용하는 불안감을 학부 및 대학원생들을 대상으로 살펴보고자 하는데 있다. 방법 이를 위해서 본 연구에서는 4명의 참여자 개별 인터뷰와 교실 참관을 통한 질적연구방법이 사용되었다. 수집된 자료는 ‘자기효능감’과 ‘동기/강화이론’을 바탕으로 분석하였다. 결과 이러한 과정을 통해 본연구는 3가지 중요한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 대부분의 기존 연구와 마찬가지로 한국학생들의 EFL 학습불안감과 그들의 효능감 사이에도 밀접한 관련성이 있었다. 둘째, 학생들이 인지하고 있는 불안감의 정도와 실제 교실에서 수행상 드러나는 불안감은 항상 일치하는 것은 아니었다. 셋째, 성공에 대한 열망, 개인적 관심, 빈번하지 않은 외국어 사용, 그리고 낮은 시험점수 등의 다양한 요소들이 학생들의 외국어학습에 동기(drive)가 되는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 본 연구의 결과가 교육자와 연구자 모두에게 중요한 시사점을 제공해 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 연구측면에서는 질적연구방법을 사용함으로써, 대학생의 자기효능감과 외국어학습 불안감에 대해서 심도 있게 살펴볼 수가 있었고, 이는 추후 연구를 위한 밑바탕이 될 것이다. 또한, 본 연구의 결과가 다양한 EFL 학습불안 정도를 가진 학생들을 가르치는 대학교 이상 레벨의 교강사들이 수업을 설계하는데 유용한 정보로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of current study is to examine levels of undergraduate and graduate Korean students English learning anxiety. Methods In order to achieve the objective, researcher conducted a qualitative study with four participants in two different universities. Interview data and classroom observation data were specifically analyzed in terms of self-efficacy and drive/reinforcement theory. Results The findings revealed a close relationship between students level of EFL anxiety and their self-efficacy displayed in their English classes. Furthermore, participants self-perceptions sometimes mismatched with their actual performance. In addition, various factors such as career success, personal interest, infrequent FL use, and low test scores may become a drive in FL learning. Conclusions The present study provides significant implications with respect to research as well as language teaching. By adopting qualitative research methods, researcher could better understand students self-efficacy and FL anxiety. In addition, the findings of this study may provide language teachers insight on how to help their students with a wide range of EFL anxiety.
