컴퓨팅 사고와 문학 : 『에밀리에게 장미를』

국문 초록

이 논문은 컴퓨팅 사고를 적용하여 문학작품을 분석할 수 있을 것인가 그리고 그 결과 새로운 분석과 결과가 도출될 것인가 하는 의문에서 시도되었다. 컴퓨팅 사고는 우리 일상사의 문제를 해결하기 위해 고안된 쉽고 과학적인 접근법이다. 그렇다면 우리 삶을 반영하는 문학작품에도 컴퓨팅 사고를 적용할 수 있을 것이다. 컴퓨팅 사고가 문제해결을 위한 접근법이므로, 먼저 컴퓨팅 사고의 기본과 원칙을 알아보고, 다음으로 문제가 내재된 작품을 찾아보았다. 그 결과 다양한 해석과 비평을 받고 있는 윌리엄 포크너의 단편 소설 에밀리를 위한 장미 를 선택하게 되었다. 그리고 작품과 관련한 비평가들의 의문을 해결하기 위해 컴퓨팅 사고에서 이용하는 분해, 패턴 인식, 추상화 및 알고리즘이라는 컴퓨팅 사고의 일련의 과정을 적용해보았다. 제목인 장미에 대한 의미와 해석, 그리고 이 작품의 가장 충격적인 결말을 보여주는 그녀의 연인의 죽음과 관련된 의문에 집중했다. 연구결과 컴퓨팅 사고를 적용한 분석 결과가 기존의 비평으로 이루어진 분석과 확연히 달라지는 것은 아니지만, 문학작품은 어떤 형태의 비평방식도 수용할 수 있는 다양한 면을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그래서 기존의 비평이 아닌 컴퓨팅 사고라는 새로운 시각으로 접근하는 것도 작품을 이해하는 또 다른 읽기방법이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This paper was attempted in the question of whether it would be possible to apply computational thinking to analyze literary works and that, as a result, new analyses and results could be derived. Computational thinking is an easy and scientific approach designed to solve problems in our daily lives. Therefore, literary works that reflect our lives could be read with computational thinking. First of all, I tried to summarize the basics and principles of computational thinking and then looked for a literary work with problems to discuss. As a result, I chose William Faulkner s short novel, A Rose for Emily, which has been widely interpreted and criticized. To answer critical questions of the work, I tried to apply a series of computational thinking processes called decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction and algorithms. Two topics, the meaning and role of “rose” in the title and the murder of Emily’s lover were focused and dealt with. Research shows that although the analysis of applying computational thinking does not differ significantly from that of existing criticisms, literature has a wide variety of aspects to accommodate any form of criticism. Therefore, I want to finish this paper with the conclusion that a new perspective of computational thinking could be another way of reading as well as traditional criticisms.
