국문 초록

데이비드 오번의 희곡『증명』은 사망한 아버지로부터 수학적 천재성과 정신적 질병을 물려받은 25세의 한 여성에 관한 작품이다. 여성수학자인 캐서린은 자신의 업적과 정체성을 증명하기 위해 다양한 방법으로 투쟁하지만 젊은 여성이 진실에 대한 과학적 개념을 객관적으로 증명하는 과정이 얼마나 어려운가를 깨닫는다. 이 극은 수학적 이론인 ‘소수’에 대한 위대한 발견의 원작자가 죽은 아버지인 로버트와 그녀의 딸인 캐서린 중 누구인가를 추적하는 일종의 미스터리 극이다. 극중에서 캐서린을 위대한 수학자로 인정하는 사람은 아무도 없기 때문에 그녀는 정신적인 혼란과 광기로 고통 받는다. 본 연구는 캐서린의 심리기제인 ‘광기’의 원인들과 증상을 페미니즘 이론과 정신분석 시각에서 탐색하고 캐서린의 천재적 수학재능과 광기, 엘렉트라 콤플렉스, 가면과 자아를 통해 여성수학자의 한계와 삶의 불확실성과의 관계를 논의하고자 한다. 캐서린의 광기는 남성 중심적인 수학세계에서 생존을 위한 수단으로 재현되고 있다.

영문 초록

David Auburn’s Proof is a play about a 25-year old woman who inherited genius in mathematics and a mental illness from her dead father. A female mathematician Catherine struggles to prove her achievement and identity in various ways but she realizes how difficult a woman proves a scientific notion about the truth objectively. This play is a kind of mystery that investigates who, the dead father or his daughter, is the great original writer about a mathematical prime number theory. In this play no one concedes Catherine as a great mathematician so she suffers from the mental confusion and madness. This study investigates the reasons and the symptoms of Catherine’s psychological mechanism ‘madness’ in view of feminism theory and psychoanalysis, also tries to discuss the relations between a female mathematician’s limitation and the uncertainty of life through her gifted mathematical talent and madness, Electra Complex, the mask and the self. Catherine’s madness is represented as a means to survive in a male-oriented world of mathematics.
