국문 초록

월트 휘트먼(1819~1892)은 시와 산문을 통해 전기에서 후기에 이르기까지 변함없이 증기선과 기관차와 같은 19세기 미국의 대표적인 속도기계에 대한 강한 애착을 보여준다. 산문 『표본이 되는 날들』에서 휘트먼은 당시 최고로 빠른 여객선이었던 증기선을 “살아있는 시”로 간주한다. 또한 「겨울의 기관차에게」(“To a Locomotive in Winter”)라는 시에서 휘트먼은 “끊임없이 재빠르게 질주하는” 기관차를 “현대의 본보기―움직임과 힘의 상징―대륙의 맥박이여”라고 칭송한다. 이렇게 그는 당대에 가장 빠른 속도기계였던 증기선과 기관차를 “빠른 움직임”을 구현하는 “현대의 본보기”로 간주한다. 자신의 시를 통해 속도기계를 재현하려는 휘트먼의 열망은 그의 독특한 시적 스타일와 기법의 발전으로 나아갔다. 속도, 에너지와 움직임을 도입하여 그의 독창적인 글쓰기 방식을 담아내고 있는 휘트먼의 대표 시집 『풀잎』은 속도와 가속화에 의해 야기된 새로운 파노라마적 지각체험을 보여준다. 휘트먼이 체득한 새로운 아방가르드적 시각은 현대적 시각기계인 영화로 이어지는 연속성을 시사할 뿐만 아니라 현재에 이르기까지 전 세계 많은 예술가들에게 끊임없이 영감을 불러일으키고 있다.

영문 초록

Throughout his entire poetry and prose, Walt Whitman invariably shows his strong attachment to the speed machines such as the steamer and locomotive of America in the nineteenth century. In Specimen Days, Whitman compares the fastest passenger steamers of the day with “living poems.” In a poem entitled “To a Locomotive in Winter,” Whitman regards the locomotive as his eternal muse by stating “Type of the modern―emblem of motion and power―pulse of the continent.” He considers the steamer and locomotive as the “rapidity of movement” because they were the swiftest speed machines in Whitman s time. Whitman s desire for representing the speed machines in his works plays an important role in the development of his poetic styles and techniques. It is not difficult to find the new panoramic experience of perception derived from the speed and acceleration in Whitman’s representative poetry collection Leaves of Grass. The new avant-gardist perspective that Whitman realized through the speed machines suggests the advent of film like the modern sight machine and has timelessly inspired a lot of artists in the world.
