체계기능언어학의 주기어 위계 연구

국문 초록

목적 이 연구의 목적은 체계기능언어학(Systemic Functional Linguistics)에 기반하여 한국어 텍스트의 주기어 위계(hierarchy of periodicity)가 어떻게 분석되는지 명시적으로 보여 주는 것이다. 구체적으로 문어와 구어의 장르적 차이에 기인한 주기어 위계 구조 양상을 보여주기 위해 신문 기사문과 간담회 텍스트를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 방법 주기어의 위계는 글의 흐름이 물의 파동처럼 작은 물결, 큰 물결, 조수 물결로 확대되어 가는 것과 같이 확대되는 구조를 가지고 있다고 본다. 즉 절 → 단락(→ 장 → 텍스트)로 확대될 때 하나의 직선으로 이어지지 않고 원을 그리면서 파동처럼 확대된다고 설명한다. 본고는 이러한 주기어의 위계가 장르적 차이를 가진다고 가정하고, 문어에서는 ‘이태원 참사’ 관련 정치 신문기사 텍스트를, 구어에서는 ‘이태원 참사’ 관련 간담회 텍스트를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 결과 주기어의 위계 구조에서 신문기사와 간담회는 서로 다른 특징을 보여주었다. 신문기사(Text-I)는 비교적 글의 짜임이 잘 되어 있고, 전형적인 주기어의 위계 구조를 준수하고 있었다. 특히 단락을 구성하는 데 필요한 HyperTheme - (Elaboration) - HyperNew의 구조를 충실히 준수하고 있음을 보여 주었다. 또 단락보다 큰 단위를 구성할 때도 MacroTheme - (단락) - MacroNew의 구조를 준수하고 있었다. 그에 반해서 간담회 텍스트에서는 MacroTheme가 생략되는 일이 발생하고, 단락을 구성할 때도 HyperTheme에 이어지는 HyperNew가 생략된 채로 다음 주제인 MacroTheme으로 넘어가는 등 기사문과 달리 취약한 주기어 위계 구조를 보여주었다. 결론 본고는 담화 의미를 연구하는 두 가지 쌍두마차로 주기어의 위계와 연속어의 확장이라는 개념을 소개하고 특히 주기어의 위계가 신문기사(Text-I)와 간담회(Text-II) 텍스트에 적용되는 과정을 제시해 보았다. 한국어 텍스트를 대상으로 ‘절(clause)’ 단위 분석을 넘어서 단락, 그리고 텍스트 차원의 담화 분석 방법을 실제로 보여 주고, 이들이 어떤 장르적 차이를 가지는지를 검토해 보았다는 점에서 이 글이 향후 다양한 장르의 한국어 텍스트 주기어 연구에 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to explicitly show how the hierarchy of periodicity in Korean texts is ana-lyzed based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. Methods The hierarchy of periodicity is viewed as having an expanding structure, like the flow of water, which expands into small waves, large waves, and tidal waves. It is explained that when the flow of text expands from clause to paragraph (→ chapter → text), it does not continue in a straight line, but expands like a wave in a circle. Assuming that this hierarchy of periodicity has genre differences, this paper analyzed the text of political news-paper articles related to the ‘Itaewon tragedy’ in written language and the text of parliamentary meeting related to the ‘Itaewon tragedy’ in spoken language. Results In terms of the hierarchical structure of the periodical, the newspaper article and the meeting showed different characteristics. The newspaper article (Text-I) was relatively well organized and followed the typical hi-erarchical structure of a periodical. In particular, it showed that it faithfully followed the structure of HyperTheme - (Elaboration) - HyperNew, which is necessary to organize paragraphs (paragraphs). It also followed the structure of MacroTheme - (Paragraph) - MacroNew when organizing units larger than paragraphs. The meeting text, on the other hand, shows a weak hierarchy, as the MacroTheme is sometimes omitted, and when organizing para-graphs, the HyperNew following the HyperTheme is omitted before moving on to the next topic, the MacroTheme. Conclusions This paper introduced the concepts of hierarchy of periodic words and serial word expansion of dis-course as two double-headed wagons for studying discourse meaning. I hope this article to be useful for future research on periodicity in Korean texts of various genres, as it demonstrates how to analyze discourse at the para-graph and text level beyond the analysis of ‘clause’ units, and examines the genre differences between them.
