목적 본 연구는 2015 개정 중학교 교육과정에서 민주시민교육과 관련한 교육의 방향과 내용이 교과별로 어떻게 제시되어 있는지 살펴보았다. 방법 이를 위하여 민주시민교육과 관련한 내용을 2015 개정 교육과정의 총론, 중학교 교과(군), 범교과 학습주제에서 민주시민교육에 대한 정의, 강조하는 시민 역량, 민주시민교육의 내용(가치 및 주제 등)과 교육활동으로 나누어 분석하였다. 결과 그 결과, 각 교과의 성격과 목표에 대부분 ‘민주시민’이라는 단어가 언급되어 있었고, 민주시민교육에서 강조하는 시민 역량을 기르는 것을 목표로 하고 있었다. 그러나 교과마다 민주시민교육을 다루는 영역 및 항목, 교육활동에 차이가 있었다. 또한 범교과 학습 주제로서 민주시민교육이 제시되어 있지만, 한정된 주제로 제시되어 있는 한계가 있었다. 결론 2015 개정 교육과정에서는 민주시민교육의 중요성을 인식하고 각 교과를 통해 교육과정 전반에 반영하기 위해 노력하였으나, 교과의 특성에 맞게 구체적인 방향을 설정하고 교육활동을 할 수 있는 방안을 제시하지는 못한 한계가 있다. 향후 교육과정 개정 과정에서 이러한 부분을 보완하는 작업이 요구된다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study looked at how the directions and contents of democratic citizenship education were presented by subject in the 2015 revised middle school curriculum. Methods To this end, the general outline, middle school subjects, and cross-subject learning topics of the 2015 revised curriculum were reviewed. The analysis was focused on the definition of democratic citizenship education, competence to be emphasized, contents(values and topics, etc.), and educational activities. Results As a result, the word ‘democratic citizen’ was mostly mentioned in the characteristics and goals of each subject. It was aimed at enhancing competence emphasized in democratic citizenship education. However, there were differences in the contents, topics, and educational activities dealing with democratic citizenship education for each subject. In addition, although democratic citizenship education was suggested as a cross-subject learning topic, there was a limitation in that it was presented as a narrow topic. Conclusions In the 2015 revised curriculum, the importance of democratic citizenship education was recognized and efforts were made to reflect it throughout the curriculum, but it was not possible to set a specific direction according to the characteristics of the subject and suggest a way to conduct educational activities. It is required to supplement these limitations in the future curriculum revision process.
