학습자의 자기주도학습 능력 배양을 위한 대안적 대학원 순차통역 교수법

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 통번역대학원 순차통역 수업에서 학생들의 긴장감은 완화시키면서 자기주도학습 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 방법을 모색하고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 전통적인 순차통역 수업 방식에 자기성찰 단계를 추가하고 연사의 사전 준비 및 수업 참여를 강화해 한 학기 수업을 운영한 후, 학생들을 대상으로 설문을 진행하여 변화된 수업 방식이 자기주도학습 역량 향상에 효과가 있었는지에 관한 의견을 수집하였다. Creswell의 6단계 분석 방법을 활용해 설문 조사 내용을 질적으로 분석하였다. 결과 자기성찰 단계 추가에 대한 답변은 크게 새로운 수업 방식의 이점, 새로운 수업 방식의 한계점, 기존 수업 방식에 대한 견해라는 세 가지 주제로 분류할 수 있었다. 역할 확대에 대한 답변도 학습 효과, 수업 분위기, 연사에 대한 건의사항이라는 세 가지 중심 주제로 구분할 수 있었다. 분석 결과 학생들은 자기성찰 단계 추가와 연사의 역할 확대 두 가지 항목 모두에 대해 스스로 생각하는 기회를 통한 학습 효과 증대, 심리적 안정감 및 수업 분위기 측면에서 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 동시에 시간 관리, 학생들의 균등한 발언 기회 등에 있어서는 전통적인 수업 방식의 장점도 재발견되었다. 결론 새로운 방식의 장점과 함께 전통적 방식의 효용도 파악된 만큼 두 가지 방식을 적절히 혼용하되 통역 경험이 없는 1학년 학생 대상 수업에서는 통역에 대한 평가보다는 학습에 주안점을 둘 필요가 있겠다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aimed to explore ways to help student interpreters develop self-regulation skills while reducing anxiety in graduate-level consecutive interpreting classrooms. Methods The author added a ‘self-regulation’ phase to the traditional consecutive interpreting class format and emphasized the preparedness of the student who served as a speaker for more active participation in post-interpreting discussions. After applying these changes for a semester, the author collected feedback from students to gain insight into whether the newly attempted method was effective in helping them become more self-regulated learners. Data were analyzed qualitatively using Creswell’s (2003) six stage analysis model. Results The responses to the addition of a self-regulation phase were largely divided into three main themes, the benefits of the new teaching method, the limitations of the new method, and the opinions on the traditional method. The responses to the expanded role of the speaker were also categorized into three main themes of benefits for learning, class atmosphere, and suggestions for speakers. Most of the students responded positively about both approaches, highlighting more effective learning through the opportunities to think for themselves, reduced anxiety, and a supportive class atmosphere. At the same time, the benefits of the traditional method were also rediscovered in terms of time management and equal opportunities to participate in class discussions. Conclusions It would be desirable to keep a balance between the old and new ways of teaching consecutive interpreting given that the benefits of both methods were identified in the student survey. For first-year students without any prior interpreting experience, however, the focus should be more on learning than evaluation of their performances.
