The Observation of Gender Stereotyping in Music Instruments, and The Process of Musical Instrument Selections of Children: Comparing the result in 2009 and 2021

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 음악 악기에 대한 성 고정관념 변화 추이 및 자녀의 악기 선정에 있어 부모의 영향에 대한 상관관계를 고찰하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 정량적, 정성적 방법으로 구성된 설명적인 순차 연구(an explanatory sequential research)를 실행하였다. 설문조사를 통하여 변화 추이를 조사하였고 인터뷰 및 교차사례분석(cross-case)을 통하여 악기선정에 있어 부모의 영향에 대한 상관관계를 조사하였다. 결과 지난 10년간 악기 고정관념은 줄어들었으나, 악기 성별을 거스르는 학생의 수는 늘어났다. 인터뷰 및 인물묘사(portrait)을 통하여 아동들의 악기선택에 있어 부모의 역할 외에 다양한 요소가 작용한다는 것을 확인하였고. 교차사례분석(cross-case analysis)을 통하여 부모들에게서 세 가지 공통점을 발견 하였다. 결론 본 연구로 악기 선택에 따른 고정관념 변화 추이를 확인하고 악기선택과정을 관찰 할 수 있었지만, 고정관념 변화의 원인과 성 고정관념을 거스르는 학생이 늘어나는 정확한 원인을 파악하기 어려움으로 더 많은 샘플을 통한 다각적인 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purposes of this study were to identify if there is a change in both gender-stereotype in musical instruments and in the number of students who chose gender-atypical instruments. In addition, this study sought to specify the parental influences on music instrument selections of children and the commonalities and differences of parental perspectives on children’s musical instrument selections. Methods An explanatory sequential research was conducted consisting of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The survey was conducted(n=328) to configure the change in gender-stereotype in music instruments, and the interview and case-cross analysis were directed to examine the relationship between parental influence and children’s music instrument selections. Results This study describes that there has been less gender-stereotyping in musical instrument selection for ten years whilst the number of cross-over students has increased through quantitative research. Moreover, the transcribed interview and cross-case analysis showed that there were various influences in children’s musical instrument selections besides parental influence, and there were commonalities between parents. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the process of a child’s selecting a musical instrument is projected from their parent’s musical background, music class experience, and peer pressure. Besides the portraits of parents provided three themes.
