천문야외 활동을 중심으로 살펴 본 초중고 학생들의 참여도 성차 분석

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 천문야외 활동을 중심으로 하여 초중고 학생들의 교실 밖 활동 참여도에서 나타나는 성차를 살펴보는 것을 주 목적으로 한다. 이와 더불어 과학 정보 및 문화예술 활동 참여도를 함께 살펴보았다. 방법 이를 위하여 2018년 한국청소년정책연구원에서 약 9천여명의 초중고 학생들을 대상으로 수행한 청소년활동 참여 실태조사결과를 이용하였다. 학생들의 활동 참여도에 영향을 미친 변수를 선택하고 주요 변수들의 분포를 살펴보기 위해 기술통계를 실시한 뒤, 핵심 변수인 성별이 참여도에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 주는지 알아보기 위하여 다중회귀분석을 사용하였다. 결과 분석 결과, 남학생의 경우 학업성적이 높을수록 모든 활동의 참여율이 높은 것으로 나타났고, 초등학생들의 참여도가 모든 영역에서 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 부모의 지원이 많을수록 천문야외활동 및 문화예술활동 영역의 참여율이 높은 것으로 나타났으나 참여 경로는 부모의 권유가 아닌 다른 경로를 통하는 것으로 나타났다. 여학생의 경우, 학업성적이 높을수록 과학정보활동 및 문화예술활동의 참여율이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 초등학생의 천문야외활동, 문화예술활동의 참여가 높게 나타났다. 한편 중학교의 경우 오히려 과학정보활동에서 참여도가 부적 관계임이 나타났다. 부모의 지원은 천문야외활동과 문화예술활동에서 긍정적 영향으로 나타났으며 과학정보활동의 경우 자발적-인터넷 정보를 통해 참여하는 경향이 있음이 나타났다. 결론 본 연구결과는 학생이 처한 환경, 즉 사회경제적 특성 및 부모의 지원이 학생의 교실 밖 천문야외, 과학정보 및 문화예술 활동 참여에 영향을 준다는 것을 보여주며, 특히 이들 활동 참여도에는 성별에 따른 차이가 존재한다는 것을 보여준다. 따라서 청소년들이 처한 환경에 따른 불균형과 성별에 따른 차이의 해소를 위해 다양한 방면으로 활동 체험 기회를 제공하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study examines whether gender disparity occurs in regard to participation in outdoor astronomical activities by students from elementary, middle, and high schools. We additionally looked into degrees of participation in scientific information and cultural/artistic activities. Methods We used the 2018 National Youth Policy Institute’s survey data of approximately 9,000 elementary, middle, and high school students. We selected parameters that affect students’ participation in the activities and examined statistical distributions of each parameter. Then, multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of gender in participation of students in the activities. Results This research shows that in the case of male students, the higher academic records, the higher participation in overall activities. In addition, male elementary school students’ participation was active in every area of extracurricular activities. While the results reveal a correlation between increased parental support and higher student participation in outdoor astronomical and cultural/artistic activities, the motives for participation are more varied than just parental suggestion. In the case of female students, the higher academic records, the more participation in scientific information and cultural/artistic activities. Furthermore, female elementary school students’ participation was active in outdoor astronomical and cultural/artistic activities. Yet, in the case of middle school, the research discloses a negative correlation regarding participation in scientific information activities. Overall, parents’ support positively influences the students’ participation in outdoor astronomical and cultural/artistic activities, and students show a tendency to voluntarily participate in scientific information activities and/or based on Internet sources. Conclusions The results demonstrate that environment-socio-economic status and parent support-affects students’ participation in extracurricular outdoor astronomical, scientific information, and cultural/artistic activities. The data particularly points out the existence of gender disparity regarding participation in those activities. Thus, in order to resolve the inequality affecting students’ environment and gender disparity, it is necessary to offer multidirectional opportunities for the participation in extracurricular activities.
