A Study on Trajectories and Influencing Factors of Middle School Students English Academic Achievement: A Growth Mixture Model Analysis

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 한국 중학생의 영어 학업성취도의 종단적인 변화 유형을 파악하고 학습자의 학업관련, 부모관련, 교사관련 요인이 영어 학업성취도의 각 유형에 미치는 영향력을 탐색하였다. 방법 분석 가능한 가장 최근의 데이터인 한국교육종단연구 2015, 2016, 2017년도의 데이터를 활용하여 성장혼합모형 분석을 실시하여 중학생의 영어 학업성취도의 종단적 변화를 유형화하였다. 또한 변화 유형에 따른 인구학적 특성 및 주요변수의 차이를 확인하기 위해 교차분석과 일원배치분산분석을 실시하였다. 결과 영어 학업성취도의 변화 유형화를 위한 모형적합도 지수 비교 결과, 영어 학업성취도의 변화 유형은 4집단(고수준 감소, 중수준 유지, 고수준 증가, 저수준 유지)로 분류되었다. 관련 요인 중에서 부모의 학업적 지지와 개별화 수업, 교사와 학생 간의 상호작용이 고수준 증가 집단과 고수준 감소집단에서 두드러진 차이가 있었다. 결론 본 연구에서 제시한 중학생 영어 학업성취도의 종단적인 변화 유형을 토대로 고수준 감소 집단에 속한 학생들에 대한 포괄적인 이해를 통해 효과적인 영어교육 방안을 탐색할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal growth trajectories of English academic achievement (EAA) of Korean middle school students and how academic, parent-related, and teacher-related factors influence each trajectory. Methods Growth mixture model (GMM) was employed to demonstrate the growth trajectories by analyzing most recent available data collected in 2015-2017 from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study. The Chi-square test and One-way ANOVA were conducted accordingly to identify differences in demographic characteristics and main variables depending on the growth trajectories. Results The result showed that the four-class GMM had the best model fit and the most precise class enumeration. The four classes were (1) high-achieving and declining, (2) moderate-achieving and increasing, (3) high-achieving and increasing and, (4) low-achieving and slightly increasing. Parental academic support, individualized instruction, and teacher-student interaction were the notable variables that students in high-achieving and increasing class reported positively than those in high-achieving and declining class. Conclusions This study presented the longitudinal growth trajectories of EAA in Korean middle school students. Pedagogical implications derived from these findings are discussed.
