국문 초록

1950년대~1990년대 한국 소설에서 기지촌을 다루는 방식은 일정 정도 정형화되어 있었다. 기지촌 여성의 고통은 ‘주권’을 둘러싼 미군과의 갈등을 증명하기 위한 증거로 활용되었고, 이 경향은 1990년대까지 이어졌다. 반면2000년대 기지촌 소설에서는 ‘여성’을 묘사하는 방법의 변모가 나타나기 시작한다. 이 논문은 이 변화 과정을 분석하여 기지촌 여성을 다루는 방식이 갖고 있는 폭력성을 가시화하고, 새로운 독법을 제시하는 데 일차적 목표를 두었다. 2000년 이후 발표된 소설에 등장하는 기지촌에서는 1990년대까지 주조저음을 이루었던 다양한 형태의 구호와전시(展示)가 한결 약화되어 나타난다. 1990년대 소설에는 미군과 협상하는 장면이 등장하는데, 여성의 시체는 시위대와 미군 부대 사이에 놓인다. 살아 있는 동안 주목의 대상이 된 적 없는 여성은 인질이 되어 민족적 울분의상징물로 제시된다. 2000년대 소설에서는 기지촌 여성의 슬픔을 손쉽게 규정하지 않고, 그에 대해 “알 수 없다”고발화한다. 여성의 몸을 인질과 증거로 치환하지 않기 위해 노력하는 것이다. 또 시간적 거리를 두고 ‘외부인’으로서기지촌에 방문함으로써 경험에 대한 해석을 다층화한다. 여성의 몸을 전시하거나 선정적으로 묘사하여 분노의 구심점을 만들어내지 않아야 한다는 문제의식을 전면화하고, 미군 성폭력을 규탄하는 집회에서 외치는 구호가 지닌남성 중심성에 대해 비판한다. 이러한 변화는 기지촌 여성의 고통을 대리 증언하거나, 그 고통을 통해 민족주의적의제를 재상정하지 않기 위해 소설이 무엇을 할 수 있는가를 보여준다.

영문 초록

The way military camp side towns were dealt with in South Korean novels in the 1950s through 1990s was standardized. The pain of women in military camp side towns was used as evidence to prove the conflict with the US military over ‘sovereignty’, and this trend continued into the 1990s. On the other hand, in the novels in the 2000s, a change in the way of depicting ‘women’ in the military camp side town space begins to appear. This paper primarily aims to analyze the process of this change with a view to visualizing the problems with the way of dealing with women in the military camp side town and presenting a new way of reading. In the military camp side towns appearing in novels published after 2000, the various forms of slogans and exhibitions that formed the main trend undertone until the 1990s appear in much weakened states. In a novel in the 1990s, a scene of negotiation with the US military appears and the negotiation is held between protesters and US troops with the dead body of a woman placed between them. The tension aroused by this confrontation shows the political nature of this space. The dead body of a woman who had never been noticed during her lifetime is taken hostage and presented as a symbol of national resentment. The novels in the 2000s do not easily define the sadness of women in military camp side towns but utter that it “cannot be known.” These novels make effort not to substitute women’s bodies for hostages and evidence. In addition, the interpretation of the experience is multi-stratified by visiting the military camp side town as an ‘outsider’ with a temporal distance. These novels put forward the critical mind that the pivot of anger should not be made by exhibiting a woman’s body or based on sensationalism and criticize the male centrality of slogans shouted at rallies against US military sexual violence. These changes show what novels can do to testify the suffering of women in the military camp side town on behalf of the women and not to reintroduce the nationalist agenda through that suffering.
