그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 변이양상

국문 초록

독일 여류 작가 비키 바움의 소설 호텔 사람들 (Menschen im Hotel, 1929)을 영화화한 할리우드 영화 <그랜드 호텔>(Grand Hotel, 1932)은 바이마르 시대, 베를린의 최고급 호텔인 그랜드호텔의 공간을 공유한 투숙객들의 에피소드를 통하여 한정된 공간적 배경 속에서의 인간 군상의 성격과 심리세태를 성공적으로 묘파하고 있다. 이후 동일 공간 속 인물들의 성격 유형과 심리를 입체적으로 대비함으로써 인간성 탐구의 장으로 나아가는 영화적시도를 그랜드호텔 형식 영화로 일컫게 되었는데, 본고에서는 배심원실이란 한정된 공간을 배경으로 한 미국 영화<12인의 성난 사람들>(12 Angry Men, 1957)과 중국 영화 <12인의 공민>(十二公民 2014)의 대비를 통해 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 변이양상을 살펴보았다. 라틴계 혼혈 소년의 평결심리를 다루는 배심원실이란 닫힌 공간에서의 인간교섭을 통해 인간심리의 저변을 드러내는 <12인의 성난 사람들>은 한 화면구도 속에 여러 인물들의 표정을 잡아 그 심리변화에 따른 추이를 확연히대비하게 함으로써 인간성 탐구의 정석을 제시하고 있다. 이를 통해, 인물의 변별적 심리 대비와 시간 속 심리추이포착에 유효한 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 전형성에 맞닿을 수 있었다. 신흥갑부 살해사건 모의재판의 배심과정을 통해 중국사회의 현재상을 조명하고 있는 <12인의 공민>은 자신의개인사를 읊조리는 인물들의 감정적 내면에 카메라의 시선을 분절시킴으로써 계층적 이력에 따른 신상 노출과 신세 한탄에 치우치고 있다. 따라서 중국사회의 계층적 현실을 강조하는 사회학적 포즈를 취하게 된다. 이를 통해 <12인의 성난 사람들>이 그랜드호텔 형식 영화로서의 전형성을 고수하는 데 비해 <12인의 공민>은그 전형에서 비껴나고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 즉. 세태조망적 관점의 <12인의 공민>에 비해 인간 탐구적 시선의 <12인의 성난 사람들>이 갇힌 공간의 인간 심리 대비를 통해 인간의 원초적 심성을 재단하는 그랜드호텔 형식영화의 본질에 훨씬 더 맞닿아 있음을 알 수 있다는 것이다.

영문 초록

The Hollywood film Grand Hotel(1932), a film adaptation of the novel Menschen im Hotel (1929) by German female writer Vicky Baum, successfully delves into the characteristics and psychological conditions of a limited spatial background through episodes of guests sharing the space of Berlin s finest hotel in Weimar era. Grand Hotel style films. Later, the cinematic attempt to advance to the venue of human nature exploration by providing three-dimensional preparation for the character types and psychology of the characters in the same space was referred to as Grand Hotel. In this paper, I looked at the variation of the Grand Hotel-style films in contrast to the American film 12 Angry Men(1957) and the Chinese film 12 Citizens(2014) set in a limited space called the jury room. 12 Angry Men(1957), which reveals the underlying human psychology through human negotiations in the jury room dealing with the verdict of a mixed-race Latino boy, presents the essence of human nature exploration by capturing the facial expressions of several characters in one screen. Thus, it is approaching the typicality of Grand Hotel-style films that are valid for different psychological preparations of characters and for capturing psychological trends in time. The 12 Citizens(2014), which sheds light on the current state of Chinese society through a mock jury process of the murder of an emerging rich man, is biased toward personal exposure and lamentation by dividing the camera’s eyes into the inner circle of a person who talks about personal history. Thus, 12 Citizens(2014) takes a sociological pose that emphasizes the hierarchical reality of Chinese society. Through this, it was confirmed that 12 Angry Men(1957) was typical of Grand Hotel-style films, while 12 Citizens(2014) was out of this. In other words, compared to 12 Citizens(2014) from a world-view perspective, 12 Angry Men(1957) from the human exploratory perspective is much more in touch with the essence of a grand hotel-style movie that judges the original human mind through the preparation of human psychology in a trapped space
