루이스 부뉴엘의 <로빈슨 크루소> 영화 각색과 ‘누가’의 문제

국문 초록

본고의 목적은 루이스 부뉴엘의 각색 영화 <로빈슨 크루소의 모험>에 나타난 그의 고유한 방식을 분석함으로써 각색에 있어 ‘누가’의 문제를 조명하는 데 있는데, 특히 그것을 이 감독에게 매우 중요한 주제였던 종교, 부르주아, 성적 욕망과 꿈의 측면에서 다루었다. 디포의 원작 소설<로빈슨 크루소>는 주인공이 하느님의 섭리를 깨달아가는 영적인 여행을 보여주지만, 부뉴엘은 소설의 종교적 관점이 과도하다고 보고 자신의 영화에서 그것을 최대한 지우고 그것에 저항하려 한다. 소설은 크루소를 ‘경제적 개인주의의 화신’이자 ‘경제적 인간’으로 묘사함으로써부르주아적 가치를 강조하지만, 영화는 그러한 묘사를 대부분 생략함으로써 그 가치를 부정한다. 소설에서는 크루소가 종교적 가치와 경제적 가치 외에 아무런 관심이 없어 여성에 대해서도 무관심하지만, 영화에서는 초현실주의의 방식으로 그를 성적 욕망을 느끼고 꿈을 꾸는 인물로 만듦으로써 소설을 재해석한다. 이러한 점들로 볼 때 우리는 <로빈슨 크루소의 모험>에 감독의 대표적 특징이 그대로 나타나 있다고 할 수 있으며, 이를 토대로 이 영화가 원작에 충실하게 각색되었다는 평가에 반론을 제기할 수 있다. 이 영화가 갖는 중요한 의미 중의 하나는 ‘누가’ 영화를 각색하는가의 문제를 잘 보여준다는 것인데, 본고의 성과는 분석을 통해 이를 밝혀낸 데 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the problem of “who” in the adaptation by analyzing his unique method shown in Luis Buñuel’s adaptation of The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. In particular, it dealt with the aspects of religion, the bourgeoisie, sexual desires and dreams, which were very important topics for this director. Defoe’s original novel Robinson Crusoe shows the protagonist on a spiritual journey to understand the providence of God, but Buñuel sees the novel s religious viewpoint as excessive and tries to eliminate it as much as possible from his film and resist it. The novel emphasizes the bourgeois value by portraying Crusoe as “an embodiment of economic individualism” and a “homo economicus,” but the film denies that value by omitting most of such depictions. In the novel, Crusoe is indifferent to women because he has no interest in anything other than religious and economic values, but in the film, the novel is reinterpreted in a surrealist way by making him a character who feels sexual desire and dreams. In view of these points, we can say that The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe shows the director s representative characteristics, and based on this, we can raise an objection to the evaluation that this film was faithfully adapted to the original. One of the important meanings of this movie is that it shows well the problem of “who” is adapting the movie, and the achievement of this paper lies in revealing this through analysis.
