동남아 화교·화인 사회의 형성과 화문교육에 대한 小考

국문 초록

이 논문은 해외 화교·화인 사회의 형성과정과 화문교육의 정착 및 그 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 해외화인이 가장 많이 분포해 있는 동남아 지역 화교교육의 어제와 오늘을 간략하게 정리해 보았다. 본 논문은 문헌 연구를 위주로 진행되었지만, 그 배경에는 연구자가 지난 몇 년 동안 동남아시아 화인사회(말레이시아, 인도네시아, 싱가포르)를 방문하고 교육관계자들과 인터뷰한 내용을 바탕으로 작성되었다. ‘화교’하면 경제인의 역할을 많이 떠올리지만, 화교사회의 형성과 유지에 있어서 ‘교육(華敎)’의 힘을 무시할 수 없다. 화교사회의 뒷받침(물리적 지원)은 경제인을 중심으로 한 민족단체(社團)가 맡고 있지만, 민족정신의 뿌리는 유·무형의 ‘학교(華校)’을 통해 이루어지고 있다. 동남아시아 화인은 국가별로 서로 다른 정착과정을 겪고 있지만, 민족지식(전통문화와 언어)을 전달할 수 있는 지식인을 양성하여 현지에서 화인의 입지를 더욱 강화하고 민족문화를 계승하기 위해 끊임없이 노력하고 있다. 우리도 이제 OECD 기준의 다문화사회를 향해 나아가고 있고, 약 750만 명의 재외동포가 있다. 화교의 경험은 우리의 과거일 수도 있고, 미래가 될 수도 있다는 점에서 고찰해 볼 가치가 있다. 본 논문은 향후 화문교육의 연구를 심화하기 위한 토대작업으로 구체적인 사례와 현황 교육자료 등이 추가로 연구될 계획이다.

영문 초록

This paper intends to examine the formation of overseas Chinese and Chinese society and; the establishment of Chinese language education and its meaning. To this end, I briefly summarized the past and present states of Chinese education in Southeast Asia, which contains the highest concentration of overseas Chinese. Although this paper primarily focused on literature research, its background was based on the researcher’s visits to Southeast Asian Chinese societies (Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore) in the recent past and interviews with education officials. “Overseas Chinese” reminds us of the role of entrepreneur, but we cannot ignore the power of “education” in the formation and maintenance of the Chinese society. Ethnic groups that are involved in business serve as the pillars that support Chinese society, but the roots of the national spirit lay within tangible and intangible “schools”. Although Southeast Asian overseas Chinese have undergone different settlement processes based on the country they reside in, they are constantly striving to further strengthen their position in the field and succeed culturally by fostering intellectuals who can transmit national knowledge (traditional culture and language). In Korea, we are now moving toward a multicultural society based on OECD standards, and there are about 7.5 million overseas Koreans. It is worth considering that the Chinese experience can serve as a reference for our future. In the future, specific cases and current state-of-the-art educational materials will be further studied in order to set the foundation for a comprehensive study of Chinese knowledge diaspora.
