한국인의 듣기 인식에 대한 탐색적 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 한국의 성인들이 듣기를 어떻게 생각하는지 조사하고, 그들의 듣기에 대한 인식 구조가 의미 연결망 분석(Semantic network analysis)에서 어떻게 표상되는지를 파악하고자 하였다. 대학생 집단과 직장인 집단으로 구분하여 두 집단 간 듣기 의식에 차이가 있는지 살펴보고, 차이가 있다면 어떤 측면에서 나타나는지 밝히려고 하였다. ‘(남의 말을) 잘 듣는다’에 대한 대학생 집단과 직장인 집단의 인식 구조를 비교한 결과, 두 집단 모두 ‘상대방’, ‘이해’, ‘공감’을 가장 중요하게 꼽았다. 그러나 대학생 집단에서만 ‘관심’, ‘기분’, ‘입장’, ‘적절’ 등이 주요 단어로 나타났다. 직장인 집단에서만 등장한 주요 단어는 ‘노력’, ‘감정’, ‘마음’, ‘수용’이며, ‘의미’, ‘생각’, ‘의견’, ‘감정’, ‘경청’ 등의 근접중심성이 높게 나타났다. 이 연구에서는 듣기에 대한 인식 구조를 더 상세하게 살펴보고자 커뮤니티 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 인식 구조는 5개 커뮤니티로 분류되었다. 첫 번째 커뮤니티에 속한 단어들은 ‘공감’, ‘능력’, ‘적절’, ‘표정’, ‘호응’이었고, 두 번째 커뮤니티에 속한 단어들은 ‘감정’, ‘기분’, ‘노력’, ‘마음’, ‘명확’, ‘상대방’, ‘상황’, ‘이해’, ‘입장’, ‘태도’, ‘파악’이었으며, 세 번째 커뮤니티에 속한 단어들은 ‘관심’, ‘맥락’, ‘생각’, ‘수용’, ‘의견’, ‘존중’이었다. 그리고 네 번째 커뮤니티에 속한 단어들은 ‘경청’, ‘의미’, ‘이야기’, ‘집중’이었고, 다섯 번째 커뮤니티에 속한 단어는 ‘질문’, ‘행동’ 등이었다. 듣기에 대한 인식이 듣기 행위나 듣기 과정에 영향을 줄 수 있는 만큼 이 연구가 ‘듣기’의 개념을 좀 더 명확히 정립하고, 듣기 이론을 체계화하는 데 기여했으면 한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates how Korean adults perceive the act of listening, and how their epistemological structure is represented in a semantic network analysis. The perception of two groups - university students and office workers were compared, and the aspect in which they differed were also investigated. With regard to “to listen (to listen to someone speak),” the two groups collectively deemed “the other,” “understanding,” and “sympathy” the most important terms. However, only in the group of university students the words “attention,” “mood,” “point of view,” and “appropriate” emerged as key terms. Key terms exclusive to the group of experts were “effort,” “emotion,” “heart,” and “acceptance,” and the terms “meaning,” “thought”, “opinion,” “emotion,” and “to listen attentively” demonstrated a close centrality as well. This study also implemented a community analysis to investigate the epistemological structure more closely. The epistemological structure was classified into five communities. The words “sympathy,” “capability,” “appropriate,” “expression,” and “response” belonged to the first group, the second community consisted of “emotion,” “feeling,” “effort,” “heart,” “clarity,” “the other,” “circumstance,” “understanding,” “attitude,” and “perception,” and the third community comprised “attention,” “context,” “thought,” “acceptance,” “opinion,” and “respect.” The terms “to listen attentively,” “meaning,” “story,” and “concentration” made up the fourth community, and the fifth community was composed of “question,” and “action.” As the perception of listening could influence the act of listening itself and the process of listening, we hope this study contributes to clarifying what the act of listening actually is, and also to systemize the theories surrounding listening.
