국문 초록

이 논문은 미국 서부 와이오밍 주의 도시 래라미(Laramie) 지역에 있는 앤틱 상점(antique stores)을 문화기술지적(ethnographic) 현장 조사 방법으로 연구한 기록이다. 앤틱 상점에서의 상점 주인과 또 이 앤틱 상점들을 방문하는 고객들의 행동, 믿음 등의 선호 사상들에 대하여 자연적인 상황에서 그들과 소통하면서 관찰된 내용을 묘사, 분석 하고 있으며, 또한 상점주들의 수집 패턴과 디스플레이 방식 등을 통해서 미국 서부문화를 상징하고 있는 물품과 그 문화가 앤틱 상점에서 구현되는 방식을 연구한다. 앤틱 상점은 평범한 일반 대중들의 역사를 되찾는 장소로서, 미국 서부를 상징하는 물건뿐만 아니라 이 물품들이 가진 ‘이야기’가 수집되고 판매되는 공간이다. 이 논문의 목적은 이러한 현장 조사 연구를 통해 미국 서부 앤틱 상점의 사회적 문화적 의미를 도출하는 것이다. 결과적으로는 미국 서부 앤틱 상점이 백인중심 문화의 역사적 지식과 기억을 생산하고 재현하는 방식에 활용되고 있음을 밝힌다. 이 연구는 한국 사회의 문화 지형에서 미국 서부문화가 재현, 변형, 융합되어지는 양상들에 대한 향후 비교문화연구에 주요한 사례 연구로서 활용될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article is a field report of American folklife that examines a collection pattern of antique store owners in the western state of Wyoming and their use of experiences to define the “antiques” and “authenticity” of the American collection. Historian Michael Douma explains that antique stores are a prime venue for recovering the history of ordinary people and a place where not only objects but also stories connected to objects in the local past are sold. Focusing on the representative antique objects in historic downtown Laramie and on the stories of antique collectors, this article examines how the social and cultural meanings of antiques in this community are used to create and recreate white-oriented historical knowledge and memories of the past.
