조선후기 고전문학의 뇌물 형상화 방식

국문 초록

본고는 조선후기 고전문학 작품에서 드러난 뇌물의 형상을 알아보고자 하였다. 이 시기 뇌물은 어떻게 정의될 수 있으며, 관료들 혹은 창작자들이 뇌물을 어떻게 받아들였는지 살펴보았다. 또한 뇌물이 그 사회배경 안에서 어떻게 작용하고, 뇌물을 주고받는 사람들이 그것을 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 알아보았다. 이것을 통해 뇌물문제가 발생했던 상황과 그것의 문제를 해결하기 위해 선인들은 어떠한 방식을 취했는지 살펴볼 수 있었다. 문학에서 뇌물관련 작품이 본격적으로 대두된 것은 조선 후기에 이르러서였다. 이전 시기에 없었던 것은 아니나 조선후기에는 봉건 체제의 모순과 부조리, 상업과 화폐 경제의 발달과 함께 뇌물 문제가 급격히 증가하였다. 그중에서도 뇌물과 관련된 작품들은 주로 현실비판가사와 서사한시, 그리고 한문단편에서 찾아볼 수 있었다.우선 현실비판가사는 사회현실을 비판한 가사작품으로 삼정의 문란의 폐해와 관료들의 수탈행위들을 적나라하게 드러냈다. 그리고 이 시기 서사한시 작품들은 백성들의 입장에서 권세가들의 행태를 고발하고 그 사이에 발생하는 사회적 모순과 갈등의 문제를 다루었다. 관료들이나 권세가들의 수탈과 그에 맞선 백성들의 대응에는 뇌물이라는 것이 관여하고 있었다. 또한 한문단편에는 부(富)에 관한 이야기들이 상당수 차지하고 있는데, 여기에도 뇌물이 작용하고 있었다. 앞에서 밝힌바와 같이 조선후기에 들어서면 다양한 문학 장르에서 뇌물과 관련된 작품들이 창작되었다. 그것은 뇌물을 인식하는 개념과 범위 그리고 정도에 이르기까지 다양하게 형상화되었다. 그들은 모두 조선후기 현실의 경험을 토대로 비판의식이 두드러진 갈래들이었다. 이들 갈래에서는 사회현실을 비판적으로 바라본다는 공통된 지향점을 지녔지만 뇌물의 형상화 방식은 갈래들끼리 겹치기도 하고 분별되기도 하였다. 이러한 현상들은 현대의 우리에게 현대사회의 뇌물문제를 다시금 바라 볼 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study examines the forms of bribery expressed in the classic literary works produced during the late Joseon Dynasty. Specifically, the study explores how bribes are defined in these works, and how bureaucrats or writers accepted these bribes. Further examination is devoted to how bribes worked in this social background, and how those who gave and took bribes were perceived. The form of a bribe in a literary work reveals the writer’s perception of it; thus, the perception towards a bribe is specific. Literary works related to bribes began to flourish during the late Joseon Dynasty. Other works related to bribes existed long before that time, but their number increased greatly since the contradiction and irrationality of the feudal system, the development of commerce, and the emergence of a currency economy during the Joseon Dynasty. The old forms of Korean verse used during the Joseon Dynasty, which criticized social reality, explicitly revealed the harmful effects of the tax system and detailed the exploitation acts performed by bureaucrats. In addition, the narrative Chinese poetry during this time criticized the conduct of powerful figures, and dealt with the problems of social contradictions and conflicts from the viewpoint of ordinary people. Short pieces in classical Chinese maintained reality as they contained various aspects of life and documented the consciousness of the age. Short pieces in classical Chinese literature described the actual events that took place in real life. The number of pieces related to bribes increased markedly. The forms of bribe in these pieces were described as a spoils system: the scope of these bribes was limited to the act of buying government positions using one’s own assets. The intervention of the narraor was not shown when it came to accumulating wealth. Furthermore, the form of character was focused on accumulating wealth in these pieces. Though their focus was on the process of accumulating wealth, these pieces did not mention what would be done with this wealth. Bribes could not be considered mutually beneficial, as they no longer had the spirit of reciprocity. Bribes in historical story books - a sort of transaction between the wealthy and bureaucrats - acted as an element that hindered public functions.
