다큐멘터리 <조선 최초 여성 명창 진채선>(2014)의 스토리텔링 전략과 그 의미

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 전주MBC 다큐멘터리 <조선 최초 여성 명창 진채선>의 구성과 특징을 분석하고, 다큐멘터리 전편에 내재된 스토리텔링의 전략과 의미를 고찰했다. 다큐멘터리는 ‘프롤로그’, ‘에필로그’, ‘자문 인터뷰’가 액자 바깥 이야기를 구성하고, ‘판소리드라마’와 ‘판소리내레이션’이 액자 속 이야기를 구성하는 방식으로 구축되었으며, 방수미의 판소리가 청각 중심의 소리로 진채선의 생애와 예술 등을 전달하는 ‘판소리내레이션’, 김나니, 왕기석 등이 연기와 판소리를 통해 각각 진채선, 신재효 등으로 분한 드라마를 시청각적으로 펼쳐내는 ‘판소리드라마’의 이중 구조를 활용했다. 다큐멘터리의 스토리텔링 전략과 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘판소리드라마’와 ‘판소리내레이션’이라는 장치를 통해 진채선이 품었던 ‘조선 최고 명창’의 꿈을 반복적으로 강조했다. 둘째, ‘신재효’와 ‘대원군’ 두 인물을 양극단에 두어 ‘여성 명창’ 진채선을 바라보는 시선을 대비했다. 셋째, 남도민요 <흥타령>을 수미상관식으로 삽입하는 구성을 통해 ‘시대의 벽을 넘은 여성’의 한계를 극적인 감동의 형태로 보여주었다. ‘판소리드라마’와 ‘판소리내레이션’의 시도나 진채선의 삶과 예술을 재해석한 관점의 측면에서 <조선 최초 여성 명창 진채선>은 지역방송 콘텐츠의 강점을 발휘한 사례라고 평가할 수 있다. 다만 진채선의 시련과 고난을 사실감이 있게 그려내지 않아 ‘시대의 벽을 넘는’ 성취의 극적 감동을 약화한 점, 배우 모두가 판소리를 하는 설정이 다소 작위적이었던 점은 한계로 지적할 만하다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the composition and features of the Jeonju MBC documentary, The First Female Master Singer of Joseon, Jin Chaesun, and reviews the strategy and meaning of the storytelling embedded in the documentary. The documentary is built in such a way that the episodes “Prologue”, “Epilogue” and “Advice Interview” constitute a story outside the frame, while “Pansori Drama” and “Pansori Narration” constitute a story inside the frame. It also utilizes the dual structure of “Pansori Narration”, in which Bang Su-mi’s pansori conveys Jin Chae-sun’s life and art with a hearing-oriented sound, and Kim Na-ni and Wang Gi-seok play an audiovisual role in dramas featuring Jin Chae-sun and Shin Jae-hyo, respectively, through acting and pansori. The storytelling strategies and meaning of the documentary are as follows. First, episodes called “Pansori Drama” and “Pansori Narration” repeatedly emphasize Jin’s dream of being the “the best master singer of Joseon”. Second, the two figures, “Shin Jae-hyo” and “Daewongun”, are placed on the two extremes to contrast their gaze on the “woman master singer”, Jin. Third, through the insertion of the folk song, “Hung Taryeong”, in the beginning and at the end of “Pansori Drama”, the limits of “Women Beyond the Wall of the Times” are conveyed in the form of dramatic emotion. From the perspective of the attempts of Pansori Drama and Pansori Narration and the reinterpretation of Jin’s life and art, The First Female Master Singer of Joseon, Jin Chaesun can be evaluated as an example of the strength of local broadcasting contents. However, the fact that Jin’s ordeal and hardships are not realistic-weakening the dramatic emotion of achievement “beyond the walls of the times” -and the fact that the settings in which all actors perform pansori are somewhat artificial are to be pointed out as limitations.
