국문 초록

전기영화 〈보헤미안 랩소디〉가 그룹 퀸(Queen)의 본고장 영국을 제치고 흥행기록을 새로 썼다. 세계적으로 성공을 거둔 영화가 되었지만 유독 한국에서의 퀸 광풍을 두고 국내외 언론들은 앞다투어 사회문화적 맥락과 연관 짓고 있다. 현재 한국사회가 처한 사회문제와 결부시키며 ‘위로받고 싶은 욕망’ 혹은 ‘현실도피’ 은퇴세대에겐 ’추억소환‘ 등 다양한 관점의 해석을 제시하고 있다. ‘레트로(retro)’라고 보는 시각도 있지만 복고 열풍이 불었던 1990년대 말부터 2000년대 초반까지의 사회, 문화, 산업 전반으로 확장된 개념의 복고현상이기보다 젊은 세대들에겐 새로운 옛것의 재발견인 ‘뉴트로(new retro)’ 현상, 즉 ‘복고를 재해석한 문화현상’으로 볼 수 있다. 기성세대는 ‘추억과 경험’에서, ‘젊은 세대는 경험하지 못한 문화에 대한 신선함과 새로운 경험’ 때문이라는 추측을 가능케 한다. 윌리엄스(Williams)는 ‘어떤 시기에 어떤 정서구조가 부상하는 것은 하나의 계급이 형성되거나 한 계급의 내부모습 분열, 또는 변화와 관련되어 있기 때문’(R. Williams, 1977)이라고 했듯이 라디오 시대로 대변되는 7, 80년대 영국 뮤지션의 전기영화 한편이 특히 한국사회에서 부상한 것은 사회적 의미 생성 구조로 연구대상이 될 만하다. 이러한 문화현상의 본질적 맥락에는 그 문화권의 잠재된 의식 체계가 근저에 침잠해 있기 때문이다. 이것이 일시적 ‘유흥’과 ‘놀이’이든 ‘현실도피’나 ‘추억팔이’이든 실존적 정서의 표출이라는 것에 주목할 필요가 있다. 전기영화로서는 흥행에 있어 한국에서 가장 성공을 거둔 그룹 퀸의 〈보헤미안 랩소디〉의 서사구조와 문화코드 분석을 통해 전기영화의 기획과 특정 국가의 문화코드와의 밀접한 관련성을 확인함으로서 후속 연구에 모종의 시사점을 제공할 수 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

The biographical film, Bohemian Rhapsody, has become more popular in Korea than in the United Kingdom, the home country of the rock band Queen. Even though the movie has become highly successful across the world, the media both in Korea and abroad, has associated its exceptional popularity in Korea with the sociocultural context. Some have attributed its popularity to the current social issues in Korea. Others have seen it as evidence of a desire to be consoled for hardships or a form of escapism. Some have argued that for the retiree generation, it could represent a recollection of the past. Unlike the social, cultural, and industrial retro movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s, among the younger generation, the popularity of Bohemian Rhapsody represents a new retro phenomenon, or a rediscovery of things of the past : namely, an emergent culture of certain media contents that is seen as a reinter pretation of retro. In this context, the movie is both anostalgic reminiscence for the older generation and the experience of a new culture for the younger generation. It is difficult to say with certainty how the source of this popularity will be further interpreted. As Williams argues, the reason for the rise of a cultural structure at a certain time is related to the formation of a new social class or the change or fracture within a social class (R. Williams, 1977). This is the case with Bohemian Rhapsody; the various meanings of this biographical film, based on the British musicians of the 1970s and 80s, require further research to understand the development of social structure. The dominant culture of subconscious resistance to reality is embedded at the core of the emergence of new retro culture. The popularity of this movie is an expression of existential culture, whether it is momentary entertainment, revelry, escapism or nostalgia. An analysis of the cultural trend of Bohemian Rhapsody will provide guidance to future studies related to the filmmaking process and storytelling in biographical films.
