레이디 가가의 융합예술 퍼포먼스에 나타난 탈경계적 요소분석

국문 초록

본고에서는 대중음악의 탈경계적 퍼포먼스의 대표적 사례로 미국의 팝 아티스트 레이디 가가에 주목하여 그 융합예술적 특성을 연구 및 분석하였다. 레이디 가가는 21세기 융합예술의 시대적 흐름 속에 새로운 문화 아이콘으로 등극하여 팝아트의 거장 앤디워홀의 예술관을 뒤바꾼 ‘아트팝(Art Pop)’을 표방하며 그 총체적 산물인 퍼포먼스를 중심으로 예술의 대중화를 주도하였으며, 대중가수로서 전례 없는 융합 예술적 공연양식의 형태를 제시하였다. 패션, 전위예술, 디지털미디어, 회화, 설치미술, 기술에 이르기까지 광범위한 매체와 장르의 혼합 및 탈장르적 협업을 통한 예술적 변형과 확장의 시도는 기존 대중음악 퍼포먼스의 한계에 도전하는 실험적 형태를 선보이며 그 탈경계적 실험성을 가시화하였다. 연구 결과 레이디 가가의 퍼포먼스 특성은 대체로 상징적, 전위적, 연극적 특성을 기반으로 하여 그로테스크(grotesque)한 패션요소의 차용과 특정 오브제(objet)를 활용한 데페이즈망(dépaysement) 설정, 디지털 미디어와 기술의 결합, 연극적 요소의 융합과 반(反)미학적 전위예술성을 무대의 요소로 활용하여 자신만의 독창적 예술관을 표출하는데 주력하였음을 알 수 있었다. 레이디 가가의 음악은 그러한 세계관을 대중에 통속화하기위한 하나의 요소로서 작용하였고, 다양한 형태의 탈경계적 퍼포먼스는 그의 이념을 집약시키는 총체수단이자 문화적 콘텐츠로서의 공신력을 갖추며 기존 대중음악 퍼포먼스의 차원을 격상 및 확장한 차별성을 갖추었다는 데에 그 융합예술적 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study focused on American pop artist Lady Gaga as a representative example of trans-boundary performance of pop music. The study examined and analyzed the convergence art characteristics of Lady Gaga’s performance. Lady Gaga became the new culture icon in the stream of convergence art in the 21st century. In pursuit of “Art Pop”, which reversed the artistic viewpoints of Andy Warhol, Lady Gaga led the popularization of art focusing on convergence art performance. In addition, Lady Gaga suggested a performance format applied in convergence art for the first time as a pop singer. She attempted artistic transformation and expansion through a mixture of and trans-genre cooperation between extensive media and genre, such as fashion, avant-garde art, digital media, painting, installation art, and technology. This attempt was experimental and it challenged the limits of existing popular music performances while visualizing such trans-boundary experimental nature. The research results showed that Lady Gaga’s performance borrowed grotesque fashion elements based on symbolic, avant-garde, and theatrical features and utilized dapplied with a specific object, a combination of digital media and technology, convergence of theatrical elements, and anti-aesthetic avant-garde art as the stage element to express own unique artistic view. Lady Gaga’s music played a role as one of the elements for popularizing such an outlook to the public. In addition, the trans-boundary performance in its various forms has significance in the aspect of convergence art as it holds public confidence in general and cultural content for converging ideas, promotes the level of existing popular music performance, and holds extended distinction.
