국문 초록

본 연구는 그 결과를 수업설계와 교과과정에 반영하기 위한 목적으로 대학생들의 영문법 학습과 대학 영문법 강좌에 대한 인식을 살펴 본 것이다. 주관식 응답과 객관식 응답을 구할 수 있는 설문지를 사용하여 조사하였고 토익점수에 따라 상/하반으로 구분하여 인식의 차이가 있는지도 살펴보았다. 학생들은 영어학습에 있어 영문법의 긍정적인 역할에 대해 동의하면서 영문법 학습과 대학에서도 영문법 강의가 필요함을 인정하였다. 문법 학습에 대한 인식에서는 문법용어에 대한 어려움을 호소하였고 특히 수준이 낮은 학생들이 더욱 그러하였으며 문장형식, 어순에 대해 가장 많이 어려움을 토로하였다. 학습방식에서는 규칙을 먼저 학습하는 연역적 학습 방법을 선호하였고 문법 번역식에 대한 의존도가 높았다. 또한 대학에서도 영문법 강좌를 개설해 줄 것을 원하였으나 필수교과목이 아닌 선택교 과목으로서의 개설을 희망하였다. 증가하는 온라인 강좌에 대한 인식도 조사하였는데, 학생들은 오프라인 학습을 선호하였으며, 온라인 강좌에 대한 긍정적, 부정적 이유들도 다양하게 언급되었다. 마지막으로 학생들은 대학에서의 영문법 강좌에 대한 여러 제안을 하였다. 본 연구는 설문항목의 결과만이 아니라 학생들의 다양한 주관식 응답 또한 교수자와 교과과정개발자에게 중요한 시사점을 가진다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

The study examined students perceptions on English grammar learning and instruction in a college in order to provide better English learning environment to them. Whether the upper level students have a different idea from the lower level ones are also examined. A questionnaire with open-ended and close-ended questions is used. The participants confirmed the positive role of grammar in improving their language ability, regardless of their proficiency level. They appeal difficulty in understanding the meaning of grammatical terms. Sentence patterns, caused by different word orders between English and Korean, are the most problematic in learning English. Deductive way of learning grammar rules and translation are welcomed in getting grammar instruction. Positive opinion about an opening of a grammar course in a college is confirmed, as an elective one. Their opinion of online and offline learning is also examined. Offline learning is favored, and their reasons for it are given. A few interesting suggestions on a better grammar course are included. Statistical difference between the two groups is not detected in most of the responses, but the upper level group appreciates the role of grammar in improvement of reading and writing more than the lower level group, while lower level group feel understanding grammatical terms more challenging. The results of the study can be all taken into account when practitioners develop English teaching syllabus and curriculum.
