국문 초록

미국 남북전쟁 중에 징집을 회피했던 대부분의 동시대 작가들과 달리 앰브로즈 비어스(1842~1914)는 북부 연방군 병사로 자원입대하여 전쟁이 발발해서 끝날 때 까지 전 기간 군에 몸을 담았다. 미국 문학사에서 비어스는 남북전쟁을 주제로 다룬 그의 많은 단편소설을 통해 거의 최초로 피비린내 나는 전투를 매우 사실적으로 묘사하였다. 그의 대표 단편소설 「치카모가」를 통해 비어스는 삶과 죽음, 순수와 경험, 공포와 웃음의 양가성이 존재하는 그로테스크의 생경한 세계를 뛰어나게 형상화하고 있다. 특히 「치카모가」는 표현주의 혹은 초현실주의 그림을 연상시키는 묘사가 두드러진다. 「치카모가」는 시대와 장르를 초월하여 많은 예술가들에 창조적 영감을 불러일으키고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 이는 「치카모가」에 영감을 받은 프랑스 영화감독 로베르 앙리코가 1962년에 발표한 <치카모가>라는 단편영화를 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 앙리코는 「치카모가」의 생경한 세계, 즉 전율과 동시에 쓴 웃음을 불러일으키는 세계를 탁월하게 시각적으로 변형시키고 있다. 그로테스크의 정수를 담아낸 영화 <치카모가>는 ‘언어적 문학성의 확장’이라는 명제를 명백히 입증해 주고 있다.

영문 초록

Unlike most of his contemporary writers who evaded the military service during the American Civil war, Ambrose Bierce voluntarily enlisted and served in the Army as a Union solider for the entire period of the war. For the first time in the history of American literature, Bierce realistically describes the bloody battle like a photograph through most of his short stories on the war. Furthermore, Bierce’s representative short story “Chickamauga” remarkably discloses the estranged world of the grotesque in which the ambivalence of life and death, innocence and experience, horror and laughter coexists. Transcending the bounds of periods and genres, “Chickamauga” has a great impact on lots of artists. This is manifested in a superb short film entitled Chickamauga in 1962 created by a French film director Robert Enrico. It is important that this film strikingly transforms Bierce’s estranged world of the grotesque reminiscent of the expressionist or surrealist painting, which provokes both horribleness and a bitter smile, into the visual representation. Enrico s film epitomizes the extension of verbal literacy as it eminently represents the essence of the grotesque in Bierce’s “Chickamauga.”
