영어의 확산과 발전모형에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 제2차 영어 확산과정 이후로 영어를 사용하는 인구가 급증하고 있는 아시아 지역에서 영어가 도입되고 발전되는 과정을 고찰하고, 이를 토대로 21세기에 영어가 추구해야 하는 발전모형을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 첫째로 영어 확산에 대한 이론적 모형을 제시하는 것이다 (Strevens, 1992; Kachru, 1992; McArthur, 1995; Modiano, 1999; Jenkins, 2003). 둘째로 아시아 영어의 도입과 발전과정을 역사적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해서, 카추루 모형(1992)을 중심으로 아시아의 외적 범주에 속하는 인도, 홍콩, 싱가포르, 필리핀과 확장 범주에 속하는 중국, 일본, 한국의 영어 발전과정을 역사적으로 고찰한다. 셋째는 21세기 정보통신기술의 발달로 세계 국가들 간의 물리적 거리감이 급격하게 줄어든 사회 속에서 세계영어가 추구해야 할 발전모형을 모색하는 것이다. 결과적으로 다중언어 환경에서 영어는 국민들 간의 중립적인 의사소통의 언어로서의 통합적 기능을 수행하며(Kandiah, 1991), 모국어를 제외하고 영어가 가장 중요한 언어이며 사회의 각 분야에서 핵심적인 역할을 담당한다는 점을 발견하였다(Crystal, 2003). 따라서 향후 세계영어의 발전 모형을 모색하는 과정에서, 원어민 화자에 대한 정의를 새롭게 수립하고, 원어민 - 비원어민의 의사소통 과정에서 원어민 영어의 일방적인 의사소통 방식을 주장하는 것을 지양하고 쌍방향적 혹은 다중적인 의사소통을 연습할 수 있는 환경구축이 필요하다(Park, 2006; 2016). 또한 세계영어 교육모형은 그 나라의 문화적 특성을 가미하여 다양화시키고(Clout, 2008), 의사소통 능력의 기준을 명료함(intelligibility), 이해가능성(comprehensibility), 설명력(interpretability)도 포함할 수 있도록 확대해야한다(Crystal, 2014).

영문 초록

This paper aims to suggest the development model for World Englishes through surveying English spread and growth in Asian context. This study has three purposes; the first is to present the theoretical models for English spread (Strevens, 1992; Kachru, 1992; McArthur, 1995; Modiano, 1999; Jenkins, 2003). The second one is to investigate the historical background of English language spread and development in Asian context. Based on Jenkin s model and Kachru s model for World Englishes, this study divided Asian countries into the outer circle countries(India, Hongkong, Singapore, Philippine) and the expanding circle countries(China, Japan, Korea), and investigate the historical background of English development and the English language policies of each country. The third purpose is to suggest the development model for World Englishes which will be used in the 21st century. Asia English plays an very important role as a communicative tool in unifying linguistic and cultural identities in the multicultural societies(Kandiah, 1991). Today the number of non-native speakers (NNS) of English in the whole world outnumbers that of native speakers (NS)(Crystal, 2003). So in the future, English language practitioners must consider the bi- and multi-directionality of interactions between NS and NNS of English(park, 2006; 2016). Also the educational models for teaching and learning English must include the linguistic and cultural diversities of the countries which belong to the outer circle and expanding circle based on Kachru s model(Clout, 2008: Crystal, 2014).
