국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 “The Ebony Tower”에 나타난 작가 John Fowles의 저술의도를 규명하는 것으로서 주인공이 현대예술의 한 단면인 추상성의 일반적 규범에 굴복하여 자기인식의 기회를 선택하지 못한 점을 지적한다. 이 중편소설은 포스트모더니즘의 한 성격으로 절대적 가치가 부재하다는 사실을 한 늙은 화가의 여성편력 그리고 불륜과 낭만의 갈등을 중심으로 서술하고 있다. 사실 이 이야기는 이틀 동안에 네 명의 서로 다른 성격을 가진 등장인물들이 식사하는 장면과 젊은이들이 나체로 수영을 하는 야유회 그리고 짧은 성적 에피소드 이외에 별다른 사건을 다루지 않는다. 하지만 그것은 현대 예술의 추상성과 재현예술의 속성을 성욕의 힘과 정당성에 비추어 대조하고 있다. 이 과정에서 책의 제목인 The Ebony Tower는 현대예술의 애매모호함과 획일성을 비난하는 것을 의미하고, 등장배경인 Coetminais는 도시의 무미건조한 세계와 다르게 자신의 진정한 자아를 드려다 볼 수 있는 거울의 역할을 함이 드러난다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to reveal the writer John Fowles’s intention shown in “The Ebony Tower” and points that the protagonist finally cannot choose the opportunity to achieve his self-awareness owing to surrendering to the general norm of abstraction that is one aspect of the modern art. This novella describes the absence of absolute value as one of the characteristics of post-modernism based on an old artist’s womanizing and the conflict between infidelity and romance. Indeed, this story does not treat other affairs except for the scene where four characters have a meal, the picnic the young people swim in the nude, and a single sexual episode. However, it compares the abstraction of modern art with the attribute of the representational art in the light of the power and justification of sexual desire. In this process, it is found out that the topic of The Ebony Tower means criticizing the ambiguity and uniformity of the modern art, and the space background Coetminais plays a role of a mirror with which to look into one’s authentic self unlike the flat world of the city.
